This is more of a guide than a tutorial, although there will be suggested learning activities.

Thanks to the OLPC folks who suggested that this would be useful for those who are new to teaching and tutoring. If you are interested in working through these lessons in a group, please sign up at the OLPC wiki page for the study group.

Mentor is more applicable than tutor

  • mentor: a trusted friend, counselor or teacher, usually a more experienced person. Some professions have "mentoring programs" in which newcomers are paired with more experienced people in order to obtain good examples and advice as they advance

In this tutorial, we will be learning about

  • Mentoring/Tutoring what it is, tutors and tutees
  • General guidelines, including online tutoring/mentoring

This tutorial is broken down into lessons. To guide your progress, several Activities are suggested for you to complete after each lesson. (Suggestion: "This class works best if you're actually tutoring while you go through the lessons. If you're not already tutoring, Lesson 1 will help you get started.")

Lessons

  • Lesson 2 - Tutoring techniques - questioning and active listening, reinforcement
  • Lesson 3 - Tutee activities
  • Lesson 4 - Teaching and learning - learning styles, adult learning
