By the end of the lesson the learner should be able to

  1. Draw a map of Kenya showing population distribution
  2. Explain at least five factors influencing the distribution of population in Kenya

Some parts of Kenya are densely populated while others are sparsely populated. Would you name at least three densely settled areas?

How about any three sparsely populated areas

So Kenya's population is unevenly distributed. Why is this so? What factors account for this difference in population density in the country?

Factors accounting for population distribution in Kenya

These factors include the following:

  • Climate
  • Topography
  • Soils

Let us now examine each one of these ata time

The major climatic factors that determine the distribution of population are:

  1. Rainfall
  2. Temperature

People tend to prefer areas that receive high amounts of, effective and reliable rainfall. Places that receive over 1,000mm are usually densely settled than those that receive low amounts of rainfall. Such high amounts of rainfall support a variety of agricultural activities. For example: tea, coffee, dairy farming thrive in such areas. On the other hand ASALs support limited agricultural activities such as nomadism
