Jeffrey Town Environmental Learning Programme: Design workshop

Aim
To strengthen the capacity of the Jet FM team to deliver programming and content which reflect the needs and aspirations of Jeffrey Town and its environs. In this instance Jet FM will design and pilot an environmental education communication programme which seeks to increase environmentally-friendly behaviour in the Jeffrey Town area. This will involve collaboration with key educational and environmental institutions and partners in both on-air and off-air elements of programme design and delivery.
Objectives
- To workshop key principles of effective learning programmes in the Jeffrey Town context
- To design the overall programme, including
- Identification of specific community needs and target audiences
- Developing a matrix of key messages that address the community’s environmental needs
- Deciding the format(s) of the radio programming
- Establishing guidelines for partnership and the roles of partners
- Identifying and planning the off-air learning support elements
- To craft at least three key pieces of learning content (e.g. edu-drama episodes that focus on particular messages); pilot one full radio show (featuring, for example, a edu-drama episode, an interview, a discussion); and run at least one off-air learning activity in the community (e.g. a group discussion about the pilot radio programme at a local secondary school)
- To form, identify roles for and train at least two programme team in the skills required to create additional content and to execute the programme; e.g. field recording, editing, scriptwriting for drama

Approach
- Participatory exploration sessions guided by a facilitator with community animation skills and the requisite appreciation of how community media systems such as radio may be used as an educational platform for the community in which the system is located.
- Technical expert-guided practical training assignments in editing, scriptwriting, programme design, and evaluation techniques.
