DAIRY FARMING IN ZAMBIA
The case of rural development
Victor Ngandu is a development worker specialising in dairy development especially among rural housholds in Zambia.
Dairy farming in Zambia is segemented into
- small,
- emergent and
- Commercial farmers
who are about 5500 in number# who market their milk in the formal channel. However there is also a similar number of farmers mostly small scale who marketing their milk informally. Most farmers use Friesien animals as dairy animal of choice followed by a jersey and some crosses. The bulk of the formal milk still comes from the commercial farmers with 80% of the milk collected but tremendously growth has being observed from the small sector in the last three years who have recorded 100% annual growth rates interms of milk collection.
