Learner contexts
Activity
Who are your learners? To what extent are they socially networked? What range of digital literacies do they currently demonstrate? With open, online learning in mind, identify the digital literacies typically required, and potentially developed through participation in open, online education. Make your suggestions in a message on our Wiggio group site. If starting the discussion, please use a subject line identifying the topic e.g. 'Learner contexts and digital literacies'. Others can then reply under this thread and avoid duplicated suggestions.
Reading
With a goal of exploring examples of open pedagogies, read:
- George Siemen’s influential 2005 conception of connectivism
- The introduction to rhizomatic learning within the Open University's free course, Open Education.
- The article Life in the open: 21st century learning and teaching (pdf, pp. 24-31) (Cormier & Stewart, 2010), which draws together openness, social connectedness, digital literacies, rhizomatic learning and directions for curriculum.
Discussion
Following the readings above, state in a message on our Wiggio group site whether or not you agree with the statement: Open education presents new opportunities for learner-driven, participatory models of curriculum design, providing examples (actual or speculative) to support your position for, or against. If starting this mini-debate, please use a subject line identifying the topic e.g. 'Learner contexts and learner-driven curriculum'. Others can then reply under this thread.
