Assessment and OEP
Reading
To gain an overview of emergent assessment issues in open education, read the Executive Summary of the recent Report on the assessment and accreditation of learners using open educational resources (OER) (pdf, pp. 5-7) (Conrad, Mackintosh, McGreal, Murphy & Witthaus, 2013)
Activity
Visit the following credit-related open education cases and compare the options presented for learners:
- Informal or for-credit open learning in Open Educational Resources Universitas (OERu) free courses
- Not-for-credit, verified open learning in the University of Michigan ‘Social network analysis' course
- Prior learning assessment and recognition (PLAR) offered by the Thomson Rivers University PLAR Service.
Activity
Investigate the current prior learning assessment and recognition (PLAR) services and credit transfer options in your learning and teaching context. To what extent are learners able to have their prior learning recognised? Are the current credit transfer options compatible with values underpinning open educational practices?
