SESSION 8 : Distance Learning

- JoinNet Home Meeting clients have to be installed on the CLICC 1 PCs. Must be pre-tested. If simple installation, can be part of the training.

- Introduction to ICT platforms for distance learning
- Format: whole group lecture with demonstrations
- Level - inclusive
- Duration - 1 hour
- Objectives
- Learn definitions
- Become familiar with an asynchronous platform Moodle
- Understand how an example of synchronous platform 3C works
- Be able to access and study ECF courses
- Be aware of sources of open distance learning courses
- Activities
- Introduction to the day by Yvan (5 mins). Explain the day's sessions and highlights. Explain the CoP forums to be used for these sessions.
- Lecture by DL (15 mins) : Overview of ICT for distance learning. Definitions. Previews of Moodle, 3C, It's Learning. Preview sources of free open courses.
- Lecture by GH (15 mins) : Introduction to Moodle. Features and basic administration. The CoP.
- Lecture by ECF teacher: (30 mins) : Demonstration of ECF courses, what they offer and how to access and study them.
- Learning how to study with Moodle : the ECF courses
- Format: in ability groups
- Level - basic but each group will move at different pace
- Objectives
- Be able to log in, access and navigate to ECF courses of interest
- Be able to follow the course using the resources and doing activities in the correct order
- Be able to locate and access free and open courses from different sources
- Activities
- In groups, a guided tour by facilitators through some ECF courses.(10 min)
- Time for participants to choose a course and practice studying (30 min)
- Talk and demonstration by facilitators : sources of free and open courses (10 minutes)
- Participants find the links in the COP and explore the free courses. Discussions and sharing of observations. (40 mins)
- Distance tuition and training by VITE
- Format - full group
- Duration - 30 mins
- Objectives
- Learn how VITE intends to use ICTs to support teachers in-service training
- Anchoring what we have learned : the needs of Vanuatu's education system, teacher professional development
- Activities
- Talk and/or presentation by VITE teacher with Q & A
- General discussion with team, ECF and VITE teachers as panel.
- 3C : an example of a synchronous, interactive tuition platform
- Format: Full group demonstration dividing into 3 equal groups for hands on experience.
- Duration : 1 hour consisting 3 x 20 minute sessions
- Objectives
- Learn the features of a modern synchronous learning platform
- Be able to interact with a teacher remotely using the features
- Understand how such a system might be used in practice (for instance by VITE)
- Activities
- Each group take a turn at hands-on experience with 3C.
- Participants are shown how to install the JoinNet client (if appropriate - client made available on server)
- Participants test headsets
- Facilitator logs in as "teacher"
- Participants are allocated usernames and shown how to log in and join the meeting (by projecting a "student" laptop)
- Once everyone is logged in, project the teacher's view.
- Facilitators guide the participants through a few simple tasks to learn the interactive features. Present a slide. Students annotate.
- VITE teacher simulates a short teacher in-service briefing (simulated scenario).
- Discussions and Q & A
- Each group take a turn at hands-on experience with 3C.
- Whilst the other groups are waiting for their turn, the APTUS mini school server can be demonstrated
- Participants can also continue looking at OER courses, practice with the tablets etc.
