General questions

  1. The use of the same type-size for subheadings is "typographically" confusing because these are hierarchically subordinate to the heading. Recommend a smaller type-size for subheadings on all pages when compared to the type size of the page heading. --Mackiwg03:41, 30 September 2013 (UTC) Done --Antons 00:57, 9 October 2013 (UTC)
  2. There should be a click through button on each carousel slide Done --Antons 00:58, 9 October 2013 (UTC)
    • 1st slide (intended for students): "How it works"
    • 3rd slide (OERu partner slide): "Meet [Partner Name]"
  3. It looks like the OERu partner logos are pulled from the Files/partnerpage section after uploading the logo on the partner page. This is fine. We have a few exceptions of logos which should not appear in the partners rotating banner, namely Donors and the UNESCO-COL Chair logos (these are not partner institutions and we do not have permission to show these logos as partner logos.) Would it be possible implement a simple hack to flag these exceptions so they're not included in the rotating partner banner. --Mackiwg02:50, 8 October 2013 (UTC) Done. Partners now have a checkbox "Show partner logo on home page rotating banner" which is enabled by default. --Antons 01:08, 9 October 2013 (UTC)
  4. Insert CC logo and reference to CC-BY 3.0 license. --Mackiwg 23:01, 29 September 2013 (UTC)
  5. CC-logo - The words "Creative Commons Attribution 3.0" should be linked to: --Mackiwg 23:03, 29 September 2013 (UTC)
  6. Use an image link for the OERu logo in the footer to link back to the homepage. --Mackiwg 23:05, 29 September 2013 (UTC)
  7. Main heading should be changed to "Courses" and current heading of "Take university-level courses online for free and submit assessments when you are ready to have your learning recognised for formal academic credit" should be changed to the strapline typface to be consistent with other pages (See for example the How it works page. --Mackiwg02:39, 30 September 2013 (UTC) Done --Antons 00:56, 9 October 2013 (UTC)
  8. There should be a button with a url like mailto:?subject=Interesting course {{course title}} at OERu&body=This looks interesting: {{course page url}} to launch the user's mail client and send annoying emails. --JimTittsler23:10, 7 October 2013 (UTC) Done --Antons 00:56, 9 October 2013 (UTC)
  9. Editorial: Second bullet under "Online learning with international classmates": Change "based entirely on open access" to "Base on open educational resources and openly accessible materials available on the Internet" --Mackiwg 23:01, 29 September 2013 (UTC) Done --Mackiwg 05:32, 10 October 2013 (UTC)
  10. Each of the OERu partner pages and subpages needs a discreet footnote: "Note: Institutional logos are all rights reserved copyright and used with permission from the OERu partner." --Mackiwg02:40, 30 September 2013 (UTC) - Suggest using the image Title attribute for this purpose - to be implemented. --Mackiwg05:37, 10 October 2013 (UTC) Done. Created a new field on the partners page called 'Partner Logo Disclaimer', the text here will appear on hover over any partner logo. Keep in mind this won't show on touch devices. --Antons 20:18, 10 October 2013 (UTC)
  11. Email icon is broken (example} --JimTittsler23:46, 7 October 2013 (UTC) Done --Antons 00:56, 9 October 2013 (UTC)
  12. The hard coded sub-heading "Take a look at our list of partner institutions below" should be changed to read: "Take a look at our list of partners, sponsors and donors below" --Mackiwg05:00, 10 October 2013 (UTC) - Done. Created a new field on the partners page called 'Isotope Title', this will let you change this in the CMS. --Antons 19:34, 10 October 2013 (UTC)
  13. Add separate filter link for donors or under the Sponsors/donors filter a clear subheading in the logo display for donors. Legally donors should not be seen as sponsors or partners. --Mackiwg05:00, 10 October 2013 (UTC) - Done --Antons 19:08, 10 October 2013 (UTC)
  14. Can an course listing from Institution A assign a facilitator registered at Institution B? We have examples where institutions share facilitators. (Can't see how this works as the assigning facilitators is not working for me.) --Mackiwg02:33, 10 October 2013 (UTC) Done --Antons 03:38, 10 October 2013 (UTC)
  15. Preview window did not function on the Learner FAQ page when previewing and edit to the main text area. After clicking preview (before save) the previous version displayed. System appeared to "hang" when trying to get back to the edit window. (Using Chromium browser). --Mackiwg 23:35, 7 October 2013 (UTC) Newbie mistake -- hit preview before "save as draft"
  16. "New" is a course nominated by a partner for completion in the future but does not have a specified date for delivery and the course materials are still under development so we can't provide a link to register.--Tauap 22:04, 10 October 2013 (UTC)
    • New courses should not use the standard calendar option for populating start and finish dates, but provides an indicative date for completion as follows:--Tauap 22:04, 10 October 2013 (UTC)
    • Text field for start date eg "Jan 2014" or "2nd quarter 2014"--Tauap 22:04, 10 October 2013 (UTC)
    • Text field for year Not required as implemented. --Mackiwg 22:07, 10 October 2013 (UTC)
    • If a course has information on start and finish dates - it should then be displayed in the Current or Future filter category (see below.)--Tauap 22:04, 10 October 2013 (UTC)
  17. On the courses page we need an additional filter for "Future" courses (aka not New or Current) --Mackiwg 02:30, 10 October 2013 (UTC)--Tauap 22:04, 10 October 2013 (UTC)
  18. It would be nice if the carousel were a fixed height (rather than being a function of the content). --JimTittsler 23:10, 7 October 2013 (UTC)
    • I agree, unfortunately we found that if the carousel was a fixed height and the slides did not all have consistent heights, some slides would have heaps of padding underneath the content. The problem is worse on smartphones. If the consistency of the content is kept the same across all slides then this wouldn't be an issue. Either way, we can change this behaviour if you really want to. --Antons 03:32, 8 October 2013 (UTC)
      • Please refer to the image attached which demonstrates the padding issue. If all slide content was consistent this would not be an issue.  A delicate balance where content is taking precedence over design - will try to monitor the copy. --Mackiwg 22:13, 10 October 2013 (UTC)
  19. The extra content field on the course content page (for example this page) is pre-populated with example text. This text can't be deleted -- can be deleted in the edit window, but reappears after saving the page. --Mackiwg 05:27, 10 October 2013 (UTC)--Tauap 22:06, 10 October 2013 (UTC)
  20. After uploading a facilitator on the institution page - when adding a facilitator from the course page the list of available facilitators does not appear. --Mackiwg 23:44, 9 October 2013 (UTC)--Tauap 00:22, 11 October 2013 (UTC) Have added functionality for choosing Facilitators from other institutions, dropdown grouped by current Partner first then all others
  21. Inserting Youtube share link on some partner pages results in the CMS "removing" the page from the site. Try the UCan page then insert this Youtube url in the video feed link: . Had the same problem with the North West University page over the weekend. Could get the video sorted - -each time "deleting" the page from the CMS. --Mackiwg 21:47, 13 October 2013 (UTC) Just added to UCan page and it works fine--Tauap 03:45, 14 October 2013 (UTC) Thanks Tauap -- mmmm, I wonder if its a local browser issue - I'll explore further. --Mackiwg 03:50, 14 October 2013 (UTC) --Mackiwg 02:56, 15 October 2013 (UTC)
  22. Content now missing on all the accordion expandable subheadings on the pages: "How it works", About OERu, Prospective partners, Learner FAQs, Organisation FAQs --Mackiwg 01:18, 15 October 2013 (UTC) Done
  23. To minimise a visual fruit salad of course graphics on the courses page, I suggest using four default graphics for the course categories as a derivative red "OERu courses graphic" on the courses page. These could be colour coded to match the Box designations for new, current, future etc. The CMS could manage the selection of the correct graphic. I suggest the following course Graphic badges:
    • New OERu course
    • Current OERu course
    • Future OERu course
    • Past OERu course --Mackiwg 23:53, 10 October 2013 (UTC) Have added new images for badges--Tauap 23:36, 14 October 2013 (UTC)

"Register to start learning" versus "Signup for course updates" buttons

In practice, course materials may not be completed at the time a scheduled course is listed on the site. In these situations it is not possible to provide the registration url for the course. On the Main Content page in the CMS can we consider:

  • Radio button option to toggle between:
    • Signup for course updates --> behaviour on published site: display "Signup for course updates" button generate an email list for the course concerned including start date identifier (so we don't mix email lists for future offerings of the course).
      • --Tauap 03:35, 11 October 2013 (UTC) If the start date is not entered for the new course, would we then use the date the registration was created as an indicator or would we use the indictive start date.
      • Yes good question - -we need a unique identifier for an instance or offering of the course, recognising, for example, if a development is delayed or postponed to a later date, the original email list will still be valid. Let me confer with Jim for ideas. --Mackiwg 03:45, 11 October 2013 (UTC) - Had a chat with Jim, we don't anticipate concurrent offerings of the same course (certainly not in the near future.) Perhaps a unique course designator eg a field of "tag length" for example "13.11" for a course anticipated in November 2013 or the "nth" instance could do the trick. We can manually clear the email list for the next instance if we use the same name for the email list (course title). --Mackiwg 04:05, 11 October 2013 (UTC)
        • The goal is to have a different mailing list (or "newsletter") for each unique course instance. I had thought the button would send a subscription request to our existing Mailman installation. Wayne says you are planning to use a Newsletter module. That sounds excellent, as long as it "confirms" the supplied email addresses and allows sending out email to those confirmed addressees for the particular course/list/newsletter. --JimTittsler 04:35, 11 October 2013 (UTC)
        • Hey Jim we were just going to save the details in a table in the database that you can query to get a list of who has signed up for updates for a certain course. It may be easier to just integrate into your existing Mailman installation, how would we intergrate into this.--Tauap 20:05, 13 October 2013 (UTC)
  • Saving it in the database would work. Are you planning to send an email with a unique "confirm" link so that you are sure what you are saving are valid email addresses? (And if so, do you rate limit how often those emails are sent?) Or is it just a table of whatever was entered and the courseid? --JimTittsler 20:58, 13 October 2013 (UTC)
  • It looks like there is a SilverStripe Labs newsletter module. If that (a) can support multiple newsletters (one per course instance id) and (b) verifies the email addresses entered (so we don't send newsletters to people that didn't intend to subscribe) that sounds ideal... since it would keep the creation of a "course instance id" to a single place. This would be my preferred solution if the Newsletter module supports it (or can be trivially extended to do so).b
  • To use mailman you would need to send an email to {{courseid}} (where courseid is a unique identifier per course instance) with the envelope From and From: header forged to be the address the user entered. (Ideally you would also rate-limit how often a single address was used to prevent this from being misused.) --JimTittsler 20:58, 13 October 2013 (UTC)
    • Registration open --> Behaviour on published site: display "Register to Start Learning" button which links to the url supplied
    • Registration closed ---> Behaviour on published site -- No button displayed.
      • --Tauap 00:26, 11 October 2013 (UTC)At the moment, have created a function that checks if their is no start and end date, it shows signup and if a start and end date is entered it uses the current behaviour. Is this what you need or would you rather have the radio buttons
      • Clever implementation for the New Courses which will always use the signup button. However, we need to cater for the situation where start and end date is entered, but course registration is not open / or available yet. Although unlikely in the OERu model, it would be prudent to have the option to "close registrations" before the end date is reached - -eg very large classes. --Mackiwg 00:39, 11 October 2013 (UTC)
      • --Tauap 04:05, 11 October 2013 (UTC) Added two check boxes one for Registration closed and one for Registration Not Yet Open, test course - Cool -- in the case of "registration not open" - it would be nice to signup learners for email updates - so perhaps use the "signup for updates button"? --Mackiwg 05:20, 11 October 2013 (UTC)
      • Done --Tauap 20:05, 13 October 2013 (UTC)

Done.. have intergrated into the newsletter mailing lists. When a future student clicks signup for course updates, a mailing list for that course is created in the newsletter module if none already exists. The prospect signs up and a verification email is sent, when they click the link in the email they are then added to the mailing list.--Tauap 23:29, 14 October 2013 (UTC)

Courses in the "new" category

  • Given that a New course does not have a fixed start date, or course materials -- the "Register to start learning" button on the detailed course page should be substituted with a "Signup for course updates" button. This button should collect an email address for generating an email list for the designated course. --Tauap 03:02, 11 October 2013 (UTC) implemented form just need to save to database, might integrate with Mailman.
