The New Zealand All Blacks are synonymous with rugby excellence and, of course, for performing the Haka, shown in the video above. Since re-establishing the team as #1 in the world rankings in 2009, they have been absolutely dominant, winning two consecutive world cups along the way.

The All Blacks are an example of a group. The whole world operates in groups – work groups, family groups, community groups – and sport is certainly no exception in that respect. The way that groups interact can have a profound effect on group performance and indeed the whole experience of being part of the group.

Imagine being a member of the All Blacks. What do you think it would be like? What behaviours would be demanded of you and which ones would be prohibited? How would the team become an effective unit?

In this module, you will:

  • Reflect on the nature of groups.
  • Consider the qualities that characterise a successful team.
  • Examine some of the factors that affect group cohesion.
  • Gain insights into team building activities.
