Who am I?

Tena koutou, my name is Helen. I am an educator/project coordinator. My own formal education involved mainly the study of Zoology at Canterbury University. After a number of different jobs ranging from Contract Scientist to Early Childhood Centre Manager I decided to train as a Secondary School Teacher. I taught Science, Maths and Biology for five years before moving to Otago Polytechnic where I worked in the area of academic support. I am presently employed at Otago Polytechnic to co-ordinate a TEC funded project to embed literacy and numeracy progressions into the teaching and learning of all our courses at level 4 and above. Unfortunately many students do not arrive at tertiary education already equipped with the necessary literacy and numeracy expertise required to meet the demands of their courses.

My other interests range from spending time with my partner and three children, gardening, sailing and walking the dog. I am also trying to learn Te reo Maori in my spare time.

Blogs and Wiki's

My blog Who's Teaching Who Here? Is a journal of my work. It began as a journal of my development of on-line support resources for students at Otago Polytechnic and the development of the wikieducator course Peer tutoring. It then became a brief journal of my work as a manager/educator in an Early Childhood Centre and is now focused on my current responsibilities at Otago Polytechnic and continuing interest in networked learning.

Some of my other blogs include:

I am also trying to contribute to the Computer Literacy Resources for Teaching wiki pages and the Develop skills for tertiary study wiki pages in my spare time.
