The rough consensus poll to select a name for the community college initiative of WikiEducator had three sections. In the first section the WikiEducator community was asked to cast their vote on the query 'Should the initiative be extended beyond wiki skills and WIkiEducator specific activities?' More than 90% voters said 'Yes'. Similarly majority of the discussions on the community college initiative was also dominated by the suggestions that the initiative should give priority to learning objectives that are relevant to building capacity for pursuing online learning as well as successful open tutoring/mentoring. In short, all these means creating of a congenial environment for online open learning to flourish. Therefore the Vision and Mission statements for WOLA have to be developed against the above backdrop.

VISION

Enabling environment for open education

( Note: Based on the discussions, first draft has been revised to ensure focus on open education, which differentiates us from "closed" education resources Anil Prasad 05:12, 16 June 2012 (UTC) )

"Enabling environment for online open learning" Is it possile to look at WOLA  as a "centre for excellence in transformative and globally competitive online open learning"?  Mbasu 11:34, 12 June 2012 (UTC)

Definitely, it should be the destination in our minds while preparing for this humble beginning. Regards Anil Prasad 09:04, 13 June 2012 (UTC)
  • See point on discussion page about possible tweaks to the vision statement -- ie a focus on open education which differentiates us from "closed" education resources --Wayne Mackintosh 04:30, 16 June 2012 (UTC)
Dear Dr. Wayne, Thank you for the very pertinent suggestions. I think your suggestion Enabling environment for open education is the right choice. Warm regards Anil Prasad 04:55, 16 June 2012 (UTC)
  • Very minor point -- The bullet "Familiarization of Open Authoring Environment" can be improved by using the plural form, eg "Familiarization of Open Authoring Environments" so we don't restrict ourselves to any given technology. --Wayne Mackintosh 04:36, 16 June 2012 (UTC)
DONE! Anil Prasad 04:57, 16 June 2012 (UTC)
  • I may have missed this -- but a point somewhere about WOLA operating within the values of the WikiEducator community. This would automatically cover all the issues relating to open technologies, free cultural works approved licenses etc. BTW - -excellent work by the team! --Wayne Mackintosh 04:36, 16 June 2012 (UTC)
  • I would like to add another thought that came to mind: How about "Enabling platform for WikiEducator community-driven Open Learning initiatives". --Patricia Schlicht 15:28, 16 June 2012 (UTC)
I think it may limit the scope, whereas we plan to create an enabling environment for Open Education in general Anil Prasad 05:06, 19 June 2012 (UTC)
Most important thing! Now I added it in the introductory lines of the Mission. You are right Mission statement is incomplete with out a mention to WE community values. Thanks again Anil Prasad 05:08, 16 June 2012 (UTC)

  • Developing Online Teaching/Tutoring/Mentoring Skills

  • Creating congenial environment for the sustainable development of innovative open learning systems like OERu

Discussions on Draft Mission

Please discuss the draft Mission here...

The Mission is mostly about creating OERs, which is great as far as it goes. Is there a place for collecting, reviewing, choosing and integrating OERs? The Learning Skills and Teaching/Mentor items could cover this but would like to see the using side emphasized, as there will ultimately be more users than creators if this whole open education goes as envisioned. --Valerie Taylor 09:57, 10 June 2012 (UTC)

Hi Valerie, you are right. More thrust is required in the using and localization side. I changed the Mission item 'Promoting the development and localization of OER' to 'Promoting the development, use and localization of OER'. Regards Anil Prasad 09:13, 13 June 2012 (UTC)

I think the way to--

  • Familiarization of Open Authoring Environments
  • Popularizing the use of OER
  • Familiarizing and popularizing Open Licensing

needs to be discussed as it very necessary to adapt and use OER in local context.--Letare Hemrom 14:04, 19 June 2012 (UTC)
