WikiEducator:Technology notes

This is where I put notes about idle thoughts, like considerations for selecting software and evaluations of specific technologies:

  • Digital Asset Management systems for storing and reusing your digital artefacts/assets (images, audio, video, and other data).
    • Omeka - which describes itself as "a free, flexible, and open source web-publishing platform for the display of library, museum, archives, and scholarly collections and exhibitions. Its 'five-minute setup' makes launching an online exhibition as easy as launching a blog" - we've tried it now, and have decided that though it's simple and "user friendly", that perceived simplicity is its weakness as it's due to actual simplicity: it's an overly basic solution to what is usually a more complex problem - i.e. it's not sufficiently rich or malleable enough to meet most institutional requirements.
  • Communication/Collaboration tools
    • Open Source Slack alternatives - aggregate multiple communications channels into one stream, with search and document storage
