Properties of Matter - Measurement, Sum of Its Parts

  • define and give an example of what matter is
  • name the physical properties of matter that can be measured (density, mass, volume)
  • determine which metric tools can be used to measure the physical properties of matter (graduated cylinders, rulers, balances, and thermometers)
  • use appropriate metric units of measure (e.g., volume = L, mL; mass = kg, g; length = m, cm)
  • compare and contrast the physical properties of one material to another (e.g., greater mass, less volume, more dense)
  • know that the weight/mass of an object always equals the sum of its parts

Key terminology: density grams liters mass matter physical properties volume weight
