My profile
I am currently the Coordinator (English) in the Institute of Distance & Open Learning, University of Gauhati, Assam, India. My name is Uttara Debi, a doctorate-degree holder. I was educated in Jaipur and Delhi and also lived in Kanpur for some time. I live in Guwahati now. I have been associated with this department of (formerly "Post-Graduate Correspondence School") distance & open learning since its inception ten years ago. So we're quite new to this field but also, the leading pioneers in the region. I have been involved in postgraduate-level teaching (in English) for nearly a decade now and have some journal publications to my credit. For two years now my young colleagues and I have been engaged in printed SLM-production which is now being recognised as displaying creditable standards of content and design. My own research interests relate to theory, culture, and society.The special interest I have now is in bringing quality to the distance-mode higher education that we are engaged in. Not only do we need to spread the privileges of higher education but also to ensure that it provides qualitative advantages over older modes of formal, face-to-face teaching methods. For too long now we have been dependent on strict restrictions on what a student wants/needs to learn. ODL systems perhaps can lead us to a solution.
