My grand challenge is on engineering better medicines. Touching upon the topic of medical machinery and devices that will be inexpensive in cost and help those in need. By doing this, diseases will decrease signicantly and a lot of the major concern relating to health will be addressed.

Discussion 1

How does the computer affect the society?

Computers are very useful for children and teenagers. The computer affects the society in many ways such as the media and some containing games. There are many uses for the computer like entertainment, education, and communication with others. A computer is an essential thing that we cannot live without.

The uses of computer have both the good and bad side. For example, one could be studying but he/she chooses to game. The good of it is being able to do researches and complete projects or assignment being assigned. Doing researches on the computer is fast and convenient.

This article is Evaluating Information - Applying the CRAAP Test. There are 5 evaluation criteria. The first one is currency about the timeliness of the information. Next is relevance in the importance of the information for your needs. Then authority where you look for the source of the information. After is accuracy, finding reliability, truthfulness, and correctness of the article. Finally, the last evaluation criteria is the reason why the information exists.

This article is about how computers and privacy don't mix. The key point is employer's rights vs employee's rights and that workers should expect to be monitored at work.

Fourth Amendment: The right of the people to be secure in their homes, papers, and against unreasonable searchers or seizures that can not be violated. Only upon probable can a no warrants be issued. The goal is protecting the people's right to privacy and freedom.

I chose this article and believe it is important because there are many hackers and scammers out there every day of the time. It is difficult to trust and tell and if a site if worth trusting or not. There are many sites that looks legit so people can tend to fall for scams. There are many approaches that people should make sure. People like myself, are very sensitive when a site is asking for certain personal information like credit card numbers or social security numbers. We should all be wary when entering sites and make sure it is safe before proceeding any further.

http://www.nba.com/blog/gilbert_arenas.html

Coming across this blog I selected it because it interests me in a way. I was able to find out that Ned Dishman is interested in helping kids and he believes it is worth every penny. I got to know that every point he makes; he donates $100 to schools that he is shooting for that night. He thinks it is great that kids take their time of the days to draw up signs for him and tries to give back to schools.

I believe that blogging indicates that people in this society are more willing to share their thoughts and ideas to each and every person out there. We live in a society where our privacy is not so much of a privacy anymore once we share or thoughts or ideas through blogging. I do not have my own blog and does not want one. I believe that my own thoughts or ideas are my own and if I do decide to share it, it would be to family or friends that knows me well; not strangers. My point of view on blogging is that people have their own choices as to wanting to share what they have and want people to know, while others like me like to keep things to myself. It really is each and everyone's preference.

Topic: The Future of the Internet II.

This article is about English displacing other languages. There are both sides of disagreement and agreement. That even though English is considered "universal", languages like Chinese are also rising among other countries.

This site explains myths about copyright. For one, “if it doesn’t have a copyright notice, it’s not copyrighted.” Templeton explained that although it was true before, but nowadays they don’t have to have a notice for it to be considered copyrighted. Another myth is “If you don’t defend your copyright you lose it.”– “Somebody has that name copyrighted!”. This is not true Templeton wrote, by owning a mar does not give you the utter complete control. I believe that they relate to the course because for this assignment 3 specifically, we are learning what intellectual property rights are and understanding it.

This article is about using the term "fair use" usually are being associated in copyright cases. This article questioned whether or not clipping articles are fair use with the U.S. court saying no. The four factors the law used to determine the amount of a violation is dependent upon: "The purpose of the duplicated content, the nature of the copyrighted work, how much of the original was copied, and the effect on the market." I believe that this article is related to this course because it raises some question about Fair Use and this article elaborates with a given example of the term well.

What is Flow?

Flow refers to a state of complete immersion in an activity that you are engaged in such as running a race. You are running as fast as you can, but you barely seem to notice how tired you are. Mihaly refers to this mental state as having time flies by from movement and action you are making. There are 10 factors that go hand in hand with the experience of flow. In order to achieve flow, you have to have a goal and response something that make you focus the whole entire time. The benefits of flow are that it can lead to improved performance and skill development.

http://www.gamesforchange.org/play/dragonbox-numbers/

DragonBox numbers is a game that is designed to help kids from 4 to 8 to learn math through intuitive understanding. Because I have a sister at home who is 5, I often try to find games that is beneficial for her on her iPad. This DragonBox game is very similar to those game, and for the price of $7.99 I am not sure if I would personally purchase it for my sister since there are similar games that are free. This game would help in my sister in understanding and applying math to real life situations when I ask her.

I chose this textbook because I have always had a interest in psychology. I think that this is a book I would read to find the common diseases people are suffering all over the world. The difference in the cost of these books are important to me because each dollar adds up, but because I am interested in learning and reading what goes on in the book, the difference is not as big. None of my instructors so far has used an open textbook in their classes that I have been at De Anza.

This article defines the word assistive technology as a piece of equipment, or product system that is used to improve a person with disabilities. AT help people who have a hard time speaking or writing and so AT is invented to help assist their need. A lot of AT cost little to nothing, even for the most expensive ones. For example, the school or government can help pay for most of it, leaving the item cost little to nothing. The ATIA is a non profit organization that help prove AT to people with disabilities. Anyone can take advantage of the same learning opportunities and become a professional to help those in need.

There are very little to proof that the two firms can get some benefit out of both cooperation and competition continuously. Coopetition depends on customer and the competitors’ resources.

Discussion 6

http://viterbi.usc.edu/research/research-vision/engineering-for-health-medicine-biological-sciences.htm

The highest priorities from all over the world today is to improve healthcare while decreasing costs. There are challenges and differences biologically and culturally, as well as organizations who wants affordable healthcare and effective clinical medicine. Researcher from biological and medical are looking into studies of different body parts correlating to health and disease. Engineers play a role for quantitative understanding and controlling biological systems. Engineers have a big impact on nano medicine and gene medicine for treating diseases such as HIV and cancer.

https://prezi.com/e1kouhjcxdfc/engineer-better-medicines/

***Personalized medicines is defined as having patient's genetic code to create medicines specifically designed for them. It is created by understanding body's proteins and biochemical reactions. The cons of personalized medicines is that the medical cost will be higher, there are a lot of trial-and-error treatments, and medicine is meant for generalized public not for individual. Chemical engineers focus on creating new drug moles in the laboratory while biomedical engineers focus on inventing organism-specific antibiotics. Better medicine contributes to a person's unique genetic information, and certain diseases. The benefit of engineering better medicine is to make disease and risk evident earlier, reduce medical costs, and reduce trial and error treatments.

Engineers are always on the look out for expanding world's medical knowledge through developing new ways to make medical machinery, devices, and inexpensive cost to those that are in need. Investment in the medical technology has helped decrease 50% in death rates from heart attack and 44% decrease from stroke. Health and biomedical issues has affected everyone internationally and domestically. They range from medical records for patients showing data of disease among health organizations.

Summary: Engineers are looking for better health ways from nano medicine to gene medicine. The main reasons for engineer better medicine is to reduce medicine costs, cure diseases such as HIV and cancer. Many organizations that invest in the medical technology has helped diseases such as stroke rate to decrease significantly. From all over the world, this is a major concern that needs to be addressed.

This article is on Google driverless car. It is to be used with two sets of sensors for when the vehicle stops and where it should go. The car is said to be able to read QR code which is a two dimensional square barcode having details about the landing strips location. People will be able to tell the car where exactly to park and where exactly to go. This car will also be able to tell if it needs to go to a repair shop or not. Engineers working on the car is saying that the car are able to react more quickly than humans so accidents will be reduced.

This presentation is on Evaluating and controlling technology by Colin Larson. Some information on evaluating is that there is a lot of information the the web that can be wrong. Nowadays, researcher is finding that academic journals cite less. When a person is on a web, and while browsing, it takes approximately 5 seconds that person to decide if they are interested or not. As of today, we are relying more and more on technology for information, even though there is a possibility that it could be wrong. The big problem in the digital divide is how fast the web is loading. Internet speed affects employment opportunity, health information, and the ability to do work in class. Internet usage and technology are used for all the same purpose, which is to improve one’s ability to do something. Although technological advancement can benefit us, there are also risks. Some examples include, less family bonding time, destroy social and intellectual skills, and makes a person mistaken want for a need.

https://www.theguardian.com/technology/2014/feb/07/year-of-code-dan-crow-songkick

In this era, technology has been progressively getting more advanced. This also means that computers are getting more technical and there is a higher demand for people with computer knowledge and skill. Coding is one example; it allows users to create websites, apps, games, and a whole list of other tech related things. Computation is a skill that everyone should learn and be familiar with.

http://www.currentpsychiatry.com/specialty-focus/practice-trends/article/for-residents-technology-can-put-professionalism-and-reputation-at-risk/d8c87a6c5c8727dd9d8b00c33b8bcf32.html

Technology can put professionalism at risk. As mobile devices are increasing in usage filled with social media, there are professional risk for unwary trainees. People are so distracted by social media and web browsers that having a lecture provided by professors seem pointless. This is a level of disrespect and shows that there is no professionalism.

http://www.theatlantic.com/technology/archive/2013/07/apples-violation-of-antitrust-law-explained-in-6-bullet-points/277679/

This article is about Apple's violating the Antitrust Law when it conspired with book publishers to increase the price of ebooks. If Apple were to get away with it, we could end up paying much more for electronic literature. But this case was mainly started by Amazon. Amazon was selling books for 10$ each which is a deal for consumers but not for publishers. Amazon was actually losing money instead of profiting, but their goal was to have more people buy Kindle e-readers. Amazon could even grow so big that they will be able to decrease book prices and this is where Apple comes into play. Apple realizing this, had proposed to let publishers retain control over retail price of their ebooks. Of course, Apple denies this and believe that they have done nothing wrong.

This article goes back to saying that people are making electronic errors when filling out forms causing a pharmacy technician to have the wrong information killing Genesis Burkett. Because of this error, there was a massive overdoes of sodium chloride of more than 60 times the amount ordered by physician. When injected into a baby of 16 weeks, the baby's heart stopped and he died. Under health reform, computer program are often put on the spotlight for having safety risks associated with medicine's advance. Although there are benefits for technology, there are also the bad. Hospital computers can crash leading to deletion of information from computerized records or data being misplaced.

http://www.genco.com/Logistics-Articles/article.php?aid=40010765

Warehousing market is coming across rising demand as retail logistics economy has been going up and down drastically. More companies are looking into having logistics partners to help with refrigerated storage into two categories; cold and frozen. Many health care organizations are also looking for refrigerated services. The main point is to have efficiency in both cold and frozen storage.

http://www.inc.com/articles/2001/06/22820.html

Direct distribution offers a lot for the company, but there are also many uncertainties. Business should analyze their products and see which are appropriate for electronic distribution. When a market is labeled as being easily entered, other vulnerabilities can be accessed with two conditions. The first is to have strong customer profitability gradient, and the second is to combine simplistic pricing that is created for Capital One and other credit cards.

https://www.ted.com/talks/charmian_gooch_meet_global_corruption_s_hidden_players?language=en

This video is on Charmian Gooch an anti-corruption campaigner. She believes that we always seem to think of minister or despot of small overseas nation living in a life of luxury. A lot of corrupt leaders make their profits through anonymous companies that they secretly own. This is commonly used all around the world to avoid paying taxes, and it is another way of stealing a large amount of money from poor countries. An example involved Democratic Republic of Congo to sell state owned mining assets to a company leading to massive profits.

I believe that smartphones are bad for you. One example is that smartphone can ruin any type of relationship with friends, family, and significant other. Most of us are spending more time on social media than spending time with companions. More people are concerned with taking pictures for social media than actually enjoying the moment. Another example why smartphones are bad is because it can damage your eyes. According to eye surgeon David Allamby, there has been a 35 percent increase for short sightedness. People are spending at least 2 hours a day gazing on their phones and can have a very bad effect on the back of the eyes, and can lead to blindness.

I think that smartphones are good for checking updates like email. Smartphones are changing in society in that we spend more time with our phone than with actual human beings. Difference in smartphone applications now is being able to pay without a credit card, and we can scan our phone to pay.

Discussion 10

http://news.mit.edu/2016/using-data-to-inform-connections-between-technology-and-policy-0722

Demetrios Kellari of TPP looks at how aircraft design changes can help to meet fuel efficiency goals. From 6,000 annual air passengers in the 1930s to 800 million today, aircraft architectures are consolidating on a design to accommodate growth in commercial airline industry. But lately, aircraft performance has decreased and was expected to decline returns in performance. But air passenger is still continuing to grow as expected 3.5 to 4.6 percent a year. Kellari's research suggest that there could be an existing airframes expected increase from 6 to 38 percent within 10 to 14 years. Kellari suggest that architecture are expected to meet demands of a future society.

These numbers are interesting because rather than air passenger decreasing, they are increasing instead. This relate to the course because although aircraft technology are slowing down, users are still rising. This quantitative information is represented through text. The presentation did not really help make the message clearer. The data might be misinterpreted because there is not actual chart or graph to show this decline or increase.

Some new and exciting technology that we have not talked about is a robot that makes food for us. This technology is something that I would like to see. Each day I spent at least one hour making dinner for two people, and it is exhausting for me to do it 7 days a week. Seeing and having a robot that can make food for me would greatly help me in so many ways. I would not have to constantly look for new recipe or think of a recipe to make for dinner each night. Instead, by having this technology I would only need to be worried about getting ingredients and have the robot cook for me. These robots would help us in the cooking environment and allow us to do other things besides cooking.

http://www.thetech.org/tech-awards-presented-applied-materials/global-humanitarian-award

I chose the year 2013 global humanitarian award for Dean Kamen. Kamen is the founder of FIRST, an organization that is meant for youth to be able to understand science and technology. Kamen's corporation has invented medicine and clean energy. Kamen developed the first portable infusion device and through DEKA, Kamen created a dialysis machine, and a motorized wheelchair.

I believe that this will be viewed as making a significant impact for the greatest number of people because anybody from everywhere around the world are in need of medicine and technology like a motorized wheelchair. I believe that health care has always come first before anything.
