What is striking about Raku is the quick pace and dramatic results of the firing process that is exciting and flattering. The technique was initially used to prepare and bake tea cups for the famous tea ceremony in Japan whereby fresh cups were made and used and had to meet the approval of the master. Over the years, potters and sculptors used, modified and evolved the technique to suit varied needs. It is now a popular and effective way of getting utility pots, figures and pots of different sizes that are not essentially food grade as they are semi porous and not baked to very high temperatures.
