Struggling with low literacy is an on-going issue that continues to affect adults of all ages. 32 million adults living in America are illiterate and 14% of adults are unable to read. This is such a bigger issue than we make note of. An individual must be able to read for every aspect of life. To study for a test, to read instructions, to read an insurance policy - the list is endless.

10 Ways Developers Can Help Adults Learn To Read

These steps are a part of the "Adult Learning: Building Paths to the Future." 36 million battle with comprehension and reading issues. The article makes note that we have established a substantial amount of reading applications for children, now we should focus on adults. The article talks about what may stand in the way of an adult furthering their ready abilities, however the article suggests what the individual should focus on rather than what they may be focusing on. An example would be if they run into a difficult word and quickly give up, they must redirect their mindset.

Top 5 Mobile Games and Apps for Adult Learners

Among the 5 mobile apps is a literacy application called "Building a Strong Vocabulary." It is a three step application that makes learning fun. The player learns to comprehend a meaning of an unknown word, acquire knowledge on multiple meaning verbiage, and analyze words.

North Texas Team Develops App To Help Adults learn To Read & Write

Group 2 "Best" resources (My Contribution)

I have placed my 3 in the order of which I enjoyed, 1 being the best.

WEEK 1:

1. Learning Literacies - Find it

The article below goes into detail about childhood literacy and the top 5 skills that are intertwined with childhood literacy.

https://www.slideshare.net/SeraEdam/learning-literacy-skills (Links to an external site.)

2. The computer was created to correct a "number crunching crisis" (Zimmermann). U.S. Census was so difficult to calculate that the government needed a solution. In came computers! Now we use computers for everything, we even utilize our very own handheld mini computers we call, cell phones.

https://www.livescience.com/20718-computer-history.html (Links to an external site.)

(Links to an external site.)

3. I enjoyed "Using Essential Questions in the Classroom for the Best Learning Ever." I believe this is similar to the way this course is taught, at least it seems to be so far. It expands our thinking and allows us to question things we may have otherwise overlooked. The article gives 6 tips on "shifting the responsibility to the learners" (Watanbe-Crockett). The steps that stood out the most to me was the suggestion to redirect a question back to the student. For example, if I ask a question, the Professor will ask me what I think instead of answering right off the bat. It's an interesting teaching method.

Week 2:

Freedom of Speech Keywords

1. According to the article below, the UN has stated, “firmly stated that the right of citizens to privacy is essential for keeping speech and expression within democracies vibrant and free.” The UN believes both are reliant on one another. The UN argues that one example is how someone may want to utilize their right to free speech but may hesitate saying it on a public platform. The UN feels people take it upon themselves to “self-censor.” Which I believe to be true.

https://ncac.org/news/blog/for-free-expression-privacy-is-a-must

These individuals made it to the XPrize Challenge. They are one of the five finalists. They have created an application to assist adults in learning to read and write. The growing concerns within their city gave them the boost of initiative to search for a solution to low literacy in adults. They are seeing positive results in field-testing. The winners should be announced this year.

2. How Privacy Laws are Changing to Protect Human Rights

With all the changes to our technology and social media posts and shares on the rise, privacy laws are changing to adapt to the needs of the people. The California Consumer Privacy Act will go into effect in January of 2020 to ensure, “greater control to individuals over their personal information.”

3. What Mom's Love is a blog a mom (obviously) created for other moms. She offers tips on healthy eating, foods kids will love, the latest children's articles, and so much more. From this blog, I am able to find several other links that I may need in the future.

https://whatmomslove.com/

WEEK 3:

1. Fair Use

The article below summarizes Fair Use, as duplicating a copyright for a short time to revision purposes. There are many rules and regulations that help to define something as fair use. There have been many court cases, which can be categorized as, "Most fair use analysis falls into two categories: (1) commentary and criticism, or (2) parody" (Stim).

https://fairuse.stanford.edu/overview/fair-use/what-is-fair-use/

Piracy

The article takes a different point of view, one from a buyer and their perspective. It begins by saying, most people don't think its a big deal that they download one song for free because the singer has money anyway, but then the breaks down the overall cost of everyone thinking that same thing. Studies show that in 2010 "$59 billion worth of software was stolen."

https://www.webroot.com/us/en/resources/tips-articles/the-societal-costs-of-digital-piracy

2. Subject: Social Media Internet Predictions

The article covers 22 predictions of Social Media accounts in 2019. On top of the many predictions, one, Kevin Goldsholl predicts we will see a decline in the use of Facebook in North America, and mentions that Facebook stories will not become an everyday use. The most interesting prediction is Alex Alam DM's, Alex predicts an application will be created to link several chat applications together. Another prediction is that Facebook will encounter another leak. When will Facebook learn? People use the social media account to connect with family but if these breaches continue to take place, will it be the end of Facebook, as we know it?

https://www.theverge.com/2018/12/15/18141595/social-media-predictions-2019-facebook-photo-leak-twitter-youtube

3. Never Share Things Online..

The article makes a lot of sense, we shouldn't share too much online because once it is out there, there is no way to take it down. One example was the boarding pass, lots of people post a picture of their boarding pass not realizing it has information that an identity thief could use.

https://askbobrankin.com/never_sh (Links to an external site.) are_these_things_online.html?awt_l=56VnD&awt_m=JlRLStkYgOP6SL&utm_source=GEMs+for+Enquiring+Minds&utm_campaign=8761129446-EMAIL_CAMPAIGN_2019_06_30_09_36&utm_medium=email&utm_term=0_e4a1948877-8761129446-12180977 (Links to an external site.)

4. Art & Computers

One way that computer technology has helped Art is by the easy access to any question you may have about Art that is being viewed. The article above explains all aspects of Art, and one key point is the ability to share and analyze art with others. The article alone proves the point that computer technology has assisted Art in its road to success.

WEEK 4:

1. Risk Forum

The Navy is studying the on-going issue of pilots losing oxygen while in the air, which is determined to be linked to malfunctioning oxygen supply systems. They will replace the systems with updated ones with the hope of resolving the issue.

https://www.nytimes.com/2018/12/27/magazine/air-force-hypoxia-pilots-navy.html

2. Computers & Crime

With the expanding use of technology in everything we do on a day-to-day basis, its no wonder computers can be traced back (or have some link) to almost every crime committed. This article speaks about how investigators need to be well versed in all digital associations. Would we see a spike in crime if we did not create the internet for everyday use?

https://www.search.org/solutions/high-tech-crime-investigation/computer-crime-investigations/

3. Change your mindset

Use Questions to Change Your Mindset

The article stresses how we react to the questions we ask ourselves. An example is, don't ask yourself something negative, like "why is every day annoying?" when your day is looking down, ask a question in a positive light, like "what am I blessed to have in my life?" The article has 3 parts to it, all which include tips on asking yourself the right questions for a better mindset.

http://advancedlifeskills.com/blog/use-questions-to-change-your-mindset/

WEEK 5:

Employment, Education, & Edutainment

EDUTAINMENT

Key Word: Edutainment

1. This article defines the term "edutainment," as education and entertainment combined so that children will be more engaged in learning because the entertainment part will encourage them to stay engaged. I agree with the author that our times are changing and it makes sense to use technology to assist in teaching our kids, along with "traditional educational style." Rating: 5/5

https://dinnertablemba.com/edutainment/

This article talks about how gaming is contributing to the advancement of edutainment. the Author stresses how games have helped, "promote learning." The article talks about how edutainment needs are increasing and will continue to increase as time goes on, stating that by 2027 the global edutainment market will reach $10, 120.2. Rating: 4.5/5

https://qbnnews.com/2019/07/12/the-new-face-of-edutainment-when-mastering-simultaneously-becomes-exciting/

2. Assistive Technology:

The link is for Assistive Technology resources, it provides a list of centers and their contact information for any questions an individual may have in various parts of California.

http://abilitytools.org/resources/at-centers.php

3. Accessibility Simulations: After attempting to read the article, it was rather difficult, I didn't realize it would be like that. I always thought dyslexia meant someone would see the letter backwards, never thinking twice that it is the entire word they see jumbled. I was able to read things but I had to really focus and it honestly gave me a headache - I can only imagine what they go through.

WEEK 6:

Grand Challenges

1. Based on the links I have included within the WikiEducator user page, I would say Adult Literacy is an issue that more and more are becoming aware of. There are several websites that offer assistance, more links for support, and a list downloadable of mobile apps. I believe this will improve our adult literacy as a whole.

http://wikieducator.org/User:Vtaylor/Computers_and_Society/CIS2_Grand_Challenges#Adult_Literacy

2. Challenges Solutions and Technology

The article's topic is human trafficking in America. Statistics within the article state America is one of the worst countries to contribute to human trafficking. I am unsure of how one could live with themselves if they take someone from their home and sell them? It seems as though it is such a large scale crime that its almost impossible to stop; however, if we can track someone by their phone, why haven't we created an application that will track someone at all times? Even if they are off the radar? I believe it can be done, with technology nowadays, it needs to be a priority.

https://www.foxnews.com/us/human-trafficking-in-america-among-worst-in-world-report

Data Security is an issue we all face daily. Within the article attached, it is stated that 80% of data breaches happen from within the organization that is hit. This is a major cause for concern. I believe that there is great technology out there that could protect us, it either has not been developed yet or (sadly) someone developed it but does not want to announce its creation. I cannot imagine we do not have an individual out there that has cracked the right code (pun intended) to our safety. The question is not how, but when will this person come forward and be our modern day hero?

3. There are only two prompts in this section

WEEK 7:

Evaluating and Controlling Technology Keywords

1. Keyword: Knowledge Sharing

I would say the only downfall given in the article is that the Author states some individuals in the workplace have knowledge but refuse to share that knowledge, this isn't a team player but according to the Author, it happens more than we know. The good aspects of the article are in the title itself, the 5 ways to increase knowledge in an organization. the outline is to provide open spaces for mingling, software that may help, comfortable spaces so that people are comfortable to share, and one that I think may help anyone share - incentives. Rate: 5/5

https://bloomfire.com/blog/522359-5-ways-to-encourage-knowledge-sharing-within-your-organization/

This article provides links for someone to gain a better understanding of knowledge sharing, if that person is unsure of what it is; then it provides statistics on employees opinions of knowledge sharing, which states 97% of employees believe it is important. After providing statistics the Author speaks on the benefits of knowledge sharing. It creates innovation, engagement, and participation to name a few, lastly, the article suggests ways to apply knowledge sharing to organizations. I didn't come across any "bad," in this article, it was all upbeat, positive, and encouraging. Rate 5/5

https://everyonesocial.com/blog/knowledge-sharing/ (Links to an external site.)

2. Simulations:

I chose the English Community Portal. It is a free educational resource for student and teachers. You can browse by topics in the links and move onto another topic in one quick click of your mouse. I reviewed the "Essentials of Linguistics," Link (Links to an external site.) I was given the option to download it and voila, I have the book at my fingertips.

https://www.merlot.org/merlot/English.htm (Links to an external site.)

3. Internet of Things:

This article breaks down all the encompasses the results online of "Internet of things." The author speaks on things like rectal thermometers, smart toasters, and smartphones to name a few. It is believed that we have only gotten started. I wonder, though, how far is too far?

https://www.wired.co.uk/article/internet-of-things-what-is-explained-iot

WEEK 8:

Risk, Failures, and Responsibilities Keywords

1. Keyword: Safety

The article attached speaks on how technology is actually improving safety. From the illegal activity monitoring to the tiny electronics we use as a bracelets - many items help whether it is with our health or our personal items.

https://readwrite.com/2019/03/27/how-technology-is-helping-to-improve-safety/

Keyword: Dependency

This article questions if we, as a society, are too dependent on technology. There are a lot of good points; such as reliant on technology for Medical practice, GPS, and Cooking, that direct to the conclusion that are we, in fact, too dependent on technology.

https://medium.com/@ethoz/are-we-too-dependent-on-technology-c48b0034a5c1

Violations

The article talks about 13 ways we are violated online. An example is, "Android's data is the backdoor to China," and how Pokemon go takes hold of your data.

https://www.mirror.co.uk/tech/13-ways-your-privacy-violated-9479084

2. Medicine and Computers

The article speaks on the 6 most common ways healthcare is assisted by technology. This is extremely important to our society, just as discussed within the article, low income patients are able to access healthcare via technology. This is just one of the many ways technology has lend a hand to healthcare. While I enjoyed this article, I do feel that there are more than 6 ways technology has helped, do you agree or disagree?

https://www.scott-clark.com/2019/01/05/6-common-uses-for-computers-in-healthcare/ (Links to an external site.)

3. Wikipedia & Trust

Mercury Seven

The article speaks about the "Mercury Seven," also referred to as the, "Original Seven." The seven all flew to space at one point. The were announced as Astronauts in 1959. Shepard was the first American to fly to space in 1961. In the "Talk," section, (Link (Links to an external site.)) it was suggested that the title be changed from hero's to NASA introduction because it was about the astronauts introduction rather than their heroism.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mercury_Seven

WEEK 9:

1. Smartphones

Bible Verse of the Day App

I live a busy life, the bible verse of the day app allows me to read about a verse which I feel keeps me grounded in my word. Each day, I get a new verse notification, I am able to set it to my preference of day or night reminders.

http://www.verse-a-day.com/apps/

Word of the Day App

This is similar to the above but with a new word daily. I feel this broadens my vocabulary, so I enjoy using it.

https://apps.apple.com/us/app/word-of-the-day-learn-english/id987136347

2. Anytime, Anywhere - Mobile

The link above talks about the potential evolution of our world 25 years from now when it comes to mobile devices and how they are used. The theory is that the internet will encompass everything, even the way we connect with one another, and society will not question it. 5/5

https://digital.gov/2014/03/13/anytime-anywhere-anything-the-effect-of-mobile-on-the-web-in-25-years/

This is a link speaks about the various types of mobile learning. It speaks about education via mobile learning, and even using an ipad. The article also speaks about how smartphones have made some decide to take extra math courses because of their smartphone utilization. 5/5

https://www.clickz.com/commerce-commerce-anywhere-anytime/25463/ (Links to an external site.)

3. Politics & Web

The Blaze

The Blaze is appealing from the moment you click on the link. There are exclusive videos, articles, links, etc. There is interesting information throughout the first section. I clicked on the article called, "Biden gets abuse during debate." It was informative, and reeled me in to want to read more. I do not see any cons, however if I had to pick one, I would say even though it is considered a political website, it doesn't have enough political articles. I rate it 5/5, I don't think the con deserves a drop in the score, because everything else is good.

https://www.theblaze.com/

Drudge Report

When you first logon, you are bombarded with links and information, which I don't see as a bad thing. Old and new information, news and other new websites. I liked the news websites, from this one web page, I am able to guide my way to others. I believe I could spend hours on this page reading up on information in any sector of the page. The only con is, I don't think the page is very appealing. I think they could do better. Even something as simple as changing the font. I rate it 4/5, mainly because of the design of the page.

https://drudgereport.com/

WEEK 10:

1. Future of Computers

The article speaks about the MeToo hashtag movement. It provides back story on the movement and then gives facts on the enormity of the issue. The author speaks about how social media is a key component in communicating. The author then decided to go on Twitter and analyze 200 thousand tweets that relate to the MeToo movement. The movement began 10 years ago, but not until October of 2017 did it really blow up. Alyssa Milano wrote a tweet and asked that anyone who was sexually harassed respond to the post and say "#MeToo." Now, we see that the movement is in full effect, and it all began with a hashtag.

I do believe the author made valid points, and also had plenty of evidence to back up the topic at hand. The conclusion is that we now have a society where everyone is aware just how frequent sexual harassment occurs. I think its unfortunate that we deal with this, as women, but its remarkable how we have made our voices heard. We will not tolerate it, or shy away from the topic. I only pray that the movement shines light on the subject so much so that we see a decrease in those affected. I pray when my daughter is older, #MeToo, will never be something she has to say.

https://medium.muz.li/the-anatomy-of-a-hashtag-a-visual-analysis-of-the-metoo-movement-ba4ecf9b130b (Links to an external site.)

2. Online Education Ascends

In 2018, a third of students took online classes. The numbers continue to rise 5.7%. The article gives facts in written form and details the rise year over year. This directly relates to our course, because we are living it. We go online daily to complete homework for a course we enrolled in online. This information cannot be misinterpreted, it is facts.

https://www.insidehighered.com/digital-learning/article/2018/11/07/new-data-online-enrollments-grow-and-share-overall-enrollment (Links to an external site.)

3. What's new and important?

Predicting preemies could save a ton of premature babies. Amniocentesis would be a thing of the past, it is as easy as some blood work now. I think that is very exciting, a start up has been launched.

https://www.technologyreview.com/lists/technologies/2019/ (Links to an external site.)
