"BEST" RESOURCES PROJECT

Best of discussion = ***

1. Introduction

Learning Literacies - Find It:

  • The article below informs you of a tool called CRAP to help you decide whether or not the information your sources are providing you is actually credible. CRAP is an acronym that stands for currency, reliability, authority, and purpose. The CRAP test is a funny and interesting way to help you sort through the vortex of, well, "crap" on the internet. [1] ***

2. Privacy and Freedom of Speech

Learning Literacies - Protect It:

  • This article tells you the do's and don'ts of posting online to protect you from spilling too much of your personal information. I chose this article because I definitely see people doing these things often and think it's good to give people a refresher. 3. Intellectual Property

Intellectual Property Key Words:

  • The link below gives a complete rundown of what the DMCA(Digital Millennium Copyright Act) is and it's stipulations. [2] ***
  • The link below gives an overview of the RIAA piracy policies. It gives a good overview of how companies implement piracy prevention. [3]

4. Crime

Computers & Crime:

  • This article discusses how cybercrime cost organizations up to 2.7 billion dollars in 2018. The article notes older people are more susceptible to cybercrime and that more than half of the victims were over the age of 50, with damages of up to 1.1 billion dollars. [4] ***
  • Risks Forum This article discusses the ways that apps are keeping track of you and your information. This article was interesting because it's just mind-boggling that there are so many companies that not only feel entitled to your information but to share it as well. [5]

5. Employment, Education, and Entertainment

Key Words Discussion:

"Edutainment"

  • This article discusses the qualities of education and entertainment as separate entities as well as how we can utilize them together, just like we do in this class. However, it mostly translates "edutainment" through the use of games rather than online courses utilizing media, but I still found it provided an interesting dialogue about combining entertainment and education. Business and Social Media Discussion:

  • This HootSuite article discusses twenty-three benefits of social media for businesses. I think the biggest thing that I took away from this article is that it makes your business, product, whatever you're putting out there accessible to mass audiences, which I'm finding to be a common topic throughout this module. Also, another fact that I thought to be interesting was that there are four billion people that utilize the internet. FOUR BILLION! [7]

6. Mid Term - Grand Challenges

Challenge Solutions and Technology Discussion:

  • Carbon Upcycling Technologies has created a way to take CO2 from the air and turn it into solid particles that can be utilized for the development of concretes, plastics, coatings, and pharmaceuticals to make them more beneficial and effective. [8] ***
  • Newlight is a company that takes CO2 and turns into biodegradable plastics. After twelve years of development, they came up with a way to make plastics by utilizing greenhouse gasses to create plastics more cost-efficiently than the use of oil. [9]

7. Evaluating and Controlling Technology

Keywords Discussion:

"Automation"

  • This article on automation discusses ways to avoid peoples' lives being impacted by job automation by teaching them new skills in the tech industries. I'd rate it a 5/5 due it being pretty clearly stated and easy to understand for the average reader and I think they make some pretty good points. [10]
  • This article discusses how minority workers are hoping to acquire a free education to not be impacted by job automation. I do think they have a point! Education is difficult to access for many people, especially minority groups. There are so many people that are marginalized by location, age, gender, race, etc., and to give them a fighting chance in this changing world I think this would be a great idea. And who doesn't want free college? I'd rate this article a 5/5 due to it shedding light on who is most affected by job automation. [11] ***

8. Risks, Failures, and Responsibilities

Keywords Discussion:

  • WESNET, a charity based in Australia, discusses the topic of women and safety when it comes to technology. They provide women with knowledge about how to safely use their devices to prevent a range of abuses such as "revenge porn", sex trafficking, gender-based harassment, and sexual exploitation. One of their main points is that women shouldn't have to stop using technology just because of other's misuse of it and that abusers should be held accountable.[12] ***
  • This article from Concordia University discusses our society today, and its dependency on technology, even to coin a new term: "Nomophobia", a state of stress caused by having no access to or being unable to use one's mobile device phone. [13]

9. Anytime, Anywhere

Keyword Discussion:

"Presence"

  • AllBusiness' article gives you "5 Reasons Why Having an Online Presence is Essential for Your Business" as the title proclaims. The main goal of this article is to convince small business owners to build an online presence for the success of their businesses. I believe the author does a good job in providing examples of how having an online presence gives your business a platform that it wouldn't have from just walk-in traffic out in the world, and discusses how most people of our time are searching for goods and services via the internet, and if you're not there you're not getting business. [14] ***

Smartphones Discussion:

  • VizWiz is an app that helps the visually impaired to decipher the world around them. For instance, if you're shopping and want to know what a specific canned good you're holding is, you would take a picture of it and someone from the VizWiz app would give you an answer. I think this is a really cool app and could help many people in making doing daily tasks like shopping and managing your funds more accessible without the fear of purchase mistakes, or being taken advantage of. [15]

10. Technology, Advances, and Social Trends

Future of Computers Discussion:

  • I chose "The Anatomy of a Hashtag - A Visual Analysis of the #Metoo Movement" from the selected media as I think it was a very well written article on how through social media you can create an entire societal movement, shaping the way we think collectively. I thought the author did a particularly amazing job in breaking down the data, utilizing art to display the explosion of this hashtag on society, and shedding light on how many people sexual harassment has affected from all around the world. Technology has allowed for so many people to stand on a platform that otherwise wouldn't be heard, and I hope that the use of these platforms continues to shed light on many more social issues and reach even more people from around the globe. I think the continuation of access for more social platforms will improve society as a whole, allowing for more collecting thinking and action to make changes that we want in our world. [16] ***

Tech Awards and Social Impact:

  • I think that PATH will have one of the biggest impacts on society in the fact that their main goal is to create equitable global healthcare. They are creating innovative ways to create and provide life-saving vaccines for current and future health epidemics around the world.
