Context of the problem

Problem statement and rationale Research questions/hypothesis (independent and dependent variables) Scope and delimitation of the study Theoretical framework You may remove this heading.

This semester I am teaching English in a group of foment level 1, in la Universidad Autonoma de Aguascalientes. In my experience as a teacher with these students I realized that L1 learners do not want to speak in English. They prefer to use Spanish instead of use the language that they are learning. So I do not know why students speak L1 when they are learners of L2. Research questions Is there a reason that young adults from level 1 do not want to speak L2 in the classroom learning? Why students do not want to use L2? Are they afraid to make mistakes? Is it hard for them to reproduce the language? Or they do not are interesting in? Scope and delimitations The study involved a class of Aguascalientes students, twenty two all, in this first level enrolled English during this first semester of the academic year 2011-2012 at the Universidad Autonoma de Aguascalientes. The students are majoring in different fields of education, so they are no classmates in all their subjects; they met each other in their English class. This study is limited to apply just one activity and one survey. There is not enough time to get data from other sources. theorical framework

method and materials

(Change these questions to the future tense when developing the procedure section before research has actually been implemented: What will be measured, How will data be collected?)

Participants You may remove this heading.

In order to do this study l chose students from a foment class, level 1, from Universidad Autonoma de Aguascalientes. Now they are studying English first level, in the language building; building II classroom 3. The students are young adults; the age of the students is around 18 to 21 years old. The students were enrolled in the first semester. They are from different careers they do not take the same classes together. Students will be informed about the study and will ask to answer a questionnaire. But they will not be informed about the role play; they will have a normal class.

Instruments You may remove this heading.

There will be to ways to collect data one is through a role play. Students have to perform the role play by choosing a character from a hand out that was carry out for them. The second way is through an instrument. The instrument will contain around 6-7 open and closed questions. All the questions will be related with this study, some questions will be more or less obvious, but the rest will be overt questions. The instruments will be 22, one for each student. The instrument will be applied in Spanish, because students do not understand long sentences. Besides, English instruments could be hard for them.

Procedure You may remove this heading.

The study primarily will be based on the data from an activity for the students; this activity is a role play. The role play is going to be applied in one normal class section. In a section of a normal class students will perform a role play, by reading a hand out, then choosing a character later writing a short dialogue and finally by acting their dialogue in front of the group. Besides there will be a questionnaire, this questionnaire will contains a combination of closed and open ended questions. The questionnaire will be initially piloted with a small sample of students (4 students from other group; same level), later on will be applied to a large number of students (22 students, level 1). The questionnaire will be in Spanish. There will be around 22 open and close questions.

Results and Data Analysis

Present the findings of the investigation using graphs, tables, etc.

Discussion

Discuss your results in terms of how they answer your research question(s) or hypothesis. Did your intervention work? What recommendations can you offer? How might others extend this research? Are there any limitations?
