Talk pages
What are discussion pages for?[edit]
I noticed that much of the discussion here takes place on pages in the main namespace, rather than on their talk pages. What is the purpose of having talk pages then? Your current practice means to throw away the nice customizations you have made for talk pages (e.g. with permalinks like this one for which I am waiting for a reply) by way of LiquidThreads. --Daniel Mietchen 10:33, 21 July 2010 (UTC)
- Hi Daniel -- I've just responded to your Liquid Threads question -- Apology for the tardy response. Has been a busy day. Good question regarding why we don't use Liquid Threads at this point. The reason for this is that the majority of participants are Newbies, and early in the workshop we have found that most folk are getting the heads around the basic editing functions. We have found that users get confused if we introduce the threaded talk-page feature to soon in the course ( the notion of a separate tab and associated talk page with each content page is a lot to take in if you are new to wikis as WikiEducator is typically the first wiki account created by 67% of users) - However, we cover these features a little later in the course. --Wayne Mackintosh 07:33, 22 July 2010 (UTC)
- I would add that creating discussions in talk pages typically does not generate an email notification. You can test this by letting me know if you received an email notification of this post. Most Newbies do not get in the habit of checking talk pages. I agree with you though and feel that WE does not use talk pages enough. --Benjamin Stewart 17:52, 23 July 2010 (UTC)
Okay, so liquid threads are the reason there's no + tab to let me add a new discussion section?
Perhaps the tutorials could mention this, because it's a bit counterintuitive; I thought 'edit history' meant, well, 'edit the history', which of course I didn't want to do on anyone's page, I just wanted to leave messages. So maybe a note for people who have used other wikis, to the effect that if you're used to starting talk pages by clicking a + sign, blah blah blah.
Or maybe it's just me.
I have yet to figure out why 'dismiss' is at the top of some pages.
I also have no clue as to whether this will automatically indent, or should I be using the colon?

- And here's another thing: the paragraphs seem to be added with dates descending; Supten's hello is written before mine, but is at the bottom of the page. But, within the paragraphs: Benjamin's response was written before mine, and is located above mine, which is what I would expect. Tallong 10:28, 30 July 2010 (UTC)
