Shark teeth (original enamel, replacement with phosphorite in cartilage of root area).jpg
Shark teeth preserved by replacement of porous cartilaginous tissue of root area by phosphorite. The original enamel on the cutting surface remains unaltered.

The dark color shown in these fossils is a good indicator that phosphate replacement has occurred.
