I am still concerned about the need for “academic volunteers international” to provide e-moderating by subject specialists as well as e-mentoring so that OERu students will have an equivalent experience to mainstream students. In the pedagogy of discovery model that I demonstrated briefly the role is primarily of an e-mentoring/facilitating nature, but I am sure students (who will probably be primarily “non-traditional”) would benefit from more “substantive” advice from time to time. To establish credibility for OERu, we need to work towards achieving “parity of esteem” with the mainstream, which typically provides e-moderating by subject specialists.

I don’t believe that this is a polarising issue – each institution will have the freedom to pursue its own approach. Jim Taylor 28 Nov 2012.
