Smoking is where tobacco is burned and the vapors are tasted or inhaled. Because it has enormous side effects in the human body, its practise has been discouraged since 1950’s. Smoking is practised by some 1.22 billion people as from 2000, and it is more frequent in developing countries. Men are more likely to smoke than women, many smokers begins in adolescence and early adulthood. Smoking provides pleasurable sensations, serving as a positive reinforcement. It is estimated that 1.45 billion are smoking in 2010. And by 2030, NHD forecasts that 10 million people will die of smoking of smoking related illnesses, and it will be the biggest cause of death worldwide.Tobacco smoking leads to serious health problems, such as heart diseases(heart attacks, strokes), cancers (lung, mouth, pancreas). The substances tar (causes cancer), nicotine (is addictive& increase cholesterol levels in body),carbon monoxide (reduces oxygen in body), components of gas and components(cause chronic obstructive pulmonary disorder) Socially, famous smokers used smoking as part of their images; in some native American cultures, smoking is o prominent part of religious rituals. However, in many religions, smoking is seen as an immoral habit. In 1970, Public Health Cigarette Smoking Act bans advertisement of cigarette on TV and radio. In Countries in European Union, Turkey, Australia, South Africa, even Mauritius, cigarette packs must be prominently labelled with health risks associated with smoking. In Mauritius, the packets have graphic images, showing smokers’ mouth, lungs. Currently many countries have total bans within all public places. So quitting smoking is the best way to escape such various diseases, and eventually death! But how to stop smoking? -Nicotine replacement therapy -antidepressants -hypnosis, acupuncture -self help(behaviour modification program) -support groups. SMOKING REDUCES ONE LIFE BY 7-8 YEARS!!!!!!!!!
