Burrowing mayflies are common in soft sediments in Lake Champlain and also occur in muddy stream pools and in larger rivers. Nymphs have prominent forward-pointing tusks that curve upwards. The fore tibia have lobes or expanded areas that facilitate burrowing. Two genera are common in and around Vermont: Ephemera and Hexagenia; Litobrancha also occurs.
