Question 1

I your view, how effective are entrepreneurship trainings in assisting young people gain livelihoods.

Victor.mensah (talk)22:58, 12 November 2010

it gives youth more confidence and resources in approaching challenging issues in their lives.

Ktembo (talk)23:00, 12 November 2010

the numbers of those that these trainings reach is minimal that we cant realise the impact you are making reference to

Nmunala (talk)23:03, 12 November 2010

Interesting... have you come across information or experience indicating that youth come out more confident?

Lungowe (talk)23:03, 12 November 2010

there are a few from a GET Ahead workshop (for example) that have been making a great number of improvements so i base my opinion on that.

Ktembo (talk)23:07, 12 November 2010

They are effective because they enable young people to start some micro businesses which will later grow into big profitable businesses.

Simonda (talk)23:01, 12 November 2010

do the trainings directly link youth to micro credit schemes?

Ktembo (talk)23:02, 12 November 2010

Not as effective as they should be - a lot more young people are still unemployed and have no source of livelihood

Nmunala (talk)23:01, 12 November 2010

True - though this raises the point that there are a number of other important linkages to youth empowerment beyond training. Therefore the question here is not only about the effectiveness of the training, but of what happens beyond the training, who has a role to play in different respects, etc.

Lungowe (talk)23:06, 12 November 2010

This is a very broad question. There are various entrepreneurship training programmes offered and the assumption is that the training leads to:

  • new skills attained in entrepreneurship
  • new skills in networking
  • opportunities opened up for marketing and other relevant links
Lungowe (talk)23:02, 12 November 2010

is it as easy as it sounds from a youth's perspective? some still have challenges in networking even after attending a workshop and attaining a certificate.

Ktembo (talk)23:05, 12 November 2010

I feel this is an assumption, the reality is that the structures on the ground (country and community levels) in many instances do not allow for the skills to be transferred effectively.

Nmunala (talk)23:05, 12 November 2010

Thank you all for your wonderful contributions. But what is our understanding of LIVELIHOODS?
