Overview of the tertiary education system in Dominica

The country has a population of approximately 78 000 people with 28% reported to reside in rural areas and 31% of the population between 0 and 14 years of age. Trend statistics for the last decade are not available.

There are two government funded tertiary education institutions in the country providing learning opportunities for several hundred students. There are also two medical schools providing instruction primarily to foreigners, but some Dominicans as well. In addition, many students use distance learning to earn degrees from universities in other countries, and there are several private tutorial colleges that provide instruction for external programmes of universities based in other countries, such as the University of London.

The University of the West Indies has four campuses: Cave Hill Campus (Barbados), Mona Campus (Jamaica), St Augustine Campus (Trinidad and Tobago), and the Open Campus.

Overview of e-learning The Open Campus, formerly known as the Distance Education Centre or UWIDEC) is responsible for distance education in all sixteen (16) English-speaking territories of the West Indies that UWI serves. These territories are Anguilla, Antigua & Barbuda, Bahamas, Barbados, Belize, British Virgin Islands, Cayman Islands, Dominica, Grenada, Jamaica, Montserrat, St. Kitts and Nevis, St. Lucia, St.Vincent and The Grenadines,Trinidad and Tobago and the Turks and Caicos Islands. The Open Campus uses "blended learning" as the delivery model (i.e., a blend of print, online resources and e-tutorials, CD-ROMs, audio-conferencing, and face-to-face) and Moodle as its Learning Management System.

Some Cave Hill Campus course lecturers are using e-learning to supplement to their face-to-face teaching. Mainly they use WebCT as their Learning Management System.
