People credited with this unit standard are able to: describe defining characteristics, and social and cultural characteristics of peoples in New Zealand. This unit standard could be of particular relevance to immigrants.

This unit is used in the following courses

Describe defining characteristics of peoples in New Zealand.

Range: Māori, Pakeha, from a Pacific Island nation, an ethnic group from Asia, one other.

  • Peoples are described in terms of general characteristics which define them.

Range: characteristics include but are not limited to - race, origin, migration pattern/s to New Zealand, language.

  • Descriptions in relation to 1.1 include reference to the notion that the descriptions are generalisations and that there are variations among individuals within each grouping.

Describe social and cultural characteristics of peoples in New Zealand.

Range: Māori, Pakeha, from a Pacific Island nation, an ethnic group from Asia, one other.

  • Description includes peoples’ social characteristics.

Range: family structures and relationships, community structures and relationships.

  • Description includes peoples’ cultural characteristics.

Range:may include but are not limited to - recreational pursuits, artistic expressions, celebrations, food.

  • Descriptions in relation to 2.1 and 2.2 include reference to the notion that the descriptions are generalisations and that there are variations among individuals within each grouping.

special notes:

  • The term Māoriis used in a broad sense to cover general characteristics of Māori in New Zealand, or to cover those of a Māori subgrouping in terms of an identified iwi, hapu, or whanau.
  • The term Pakeha is used in a broad sense to cover a range of ethnic groups, and does not exclude any specific European grouping such as Dutch or Croatian under the term (in the range statements of Elements 1 and 2) one other.
  • This unit standard may be taught and assessed in any language.
  • All activities related to this unit standard must avoid stereotyping. This is the reason for the inclusion of performance criteria 1.2 and 2.3.
