Key points

In this lesson students will learn about e-mailing, chat rooms and instant messaging and how to keep safe online. It is important to reinforce what students need to do if they need help and the importance of keeping themselves safe online.

Activity

This module begins with students looking at a video on Digital Dossiers. This video shows students some of the information that may be stored online about them and gets them to think about the digital footprint they are leaving behind. There are then three lessons / bits of information for the students to read on e-mails, ]http://papnet.papanui.school.nz/mod/page/view.php?id=12782 chat rooms] and instant messaging.

Tasks: There are three games that students can have a look at / play to test their knowledge on e-mails, chat rooms and instant messaging. The three games are: Safe to open? The ASL files and Who's your buddy? The students can manually mark these as complete depending on which ones they look at.

Assessment

The assessment for this module requires students to add a comment to a Chat. This is to give them an experience of a chat situation.
