The Pan African Youth Union (PYU) is supposed to be the official youth wing of the African Union (AU). So far little is known of its operations even by youth activists across the continent except for some indications that it may be headquartered in Algiers, Algeria.

Formerly it was called the Pan African Youth Movement. The name was changed to reflect new expectations and a new outlook for the organisation. Which can also be directly linked to the new outlook for the African Union itself which has also metamorphosed from the Organisation of African Unity (OAU) into the African Union (AU) at about the same time.

Currently, the AU is implementing the contents of the African Youth Charter which came into operation in 2009 when the 16th country ratified the charter. Though the PYU is by design a co-ordinating body of youth councils across the continent, it is natural to expect that it is at the forefront for promoting the ratification and implementation of the African Youth Charter (AYC).
