Observation from Classmate (Greg Woo)

The large book on our Reading List: Managing Cultural Differences: Global Leadership strategies for the 21st Century (Moran 2007) has some good content regarding this query. It contains more background and history information (important for understanding the drivers behind the cultural behaviors) and less application-oriented "do this" directives than the Berlitz materials, however "how-to" guidance can backfire without an adequate understanding of the "whys."

  • Khaldun, Ibn (as quoted in Fielding Fieldkit #62)

"One of the great history books of all time was written by Ibn Khaldun (author of the Muqaddimah or Introduction to History, finished in the year 1377. It’s a very rigorous analysis of the rise and fall of civilizations, and the way it got written is an interesting story in itself, because Khaldun was deeply engaged in making history, as an advisor to various kings and sultans of the time. But as a result, the book suffered, and the more his data and experience accumulated, the greater became the struggle to put it all on paper. He worked on it without great results for literally decades, until at one point, he found a period of peace and quiet on the Mediterranean coast, and then it happened. Suddenly, as he put it, he found: “words and ideas pouring into my head like cream into a churn.”
