Known issues

  • Some of the images don't appear
  • Some of the links don't work as is (I think both of these are the harvest script)

Issues resolved (Version 0.1)

# Type Details Reporter Time (UTC)
1 Issue Redundant home page. As the blog title is editable and links back to the home page, the home page menu option is redundant. To conserve real estate I recommend that we remove the home link.
PL Edit - Home page is added as part of the menu. Using the WordPress menu config tool can remove or add this
Is there a way we can script the theme install so the default removes the home menu? --Mackiwg (talk) 22:53, 6 February 2015 (UTC)
PL Edit - the menu creation page creates the initial menu which can be changed later if needed.
Wayne Mackintosh 2015-02-06 01:39
2 Bug Icon graphic for pedagogical templates not displaying. See for example here and Key points here.
PL Edit - Harvest script issue?
I had expected the icons to be embedded in the theme, but we can change the harvest script to hotlink them from WikiEducator. --Jim Tittsler (talk) 07:26, 11 February 2015 (UTC)
My preference is to have the icons for idevices packaged with the theme. --Mackiwg (talk) 21:18, 15 February 2015 (UTC)
PL edit - problem is the image path is in HTML brought in from the harvest script, so the image being part of the theme won't change this as the HTML is there already
Wayne Mackintosh 2015-02-06 01:49
3 Bug CSS bug where normal text in numbered list is rendering as bold. See numbered list here
PL Edit - Fixed in the last version (will upload later)
Wayne Mackintosh 2015-02-06 01:50
4 Bug Headings and subheadings not rendering in the theme colour. (Subheadings in the blue theme should be blue and green OERu theme should be green.)
PL Question - Could you send me an example?
If you look at the blue Otago Polytechnic theme, pPage headings and sub-headings are blue (In the current WP version only the page heading is blue, but in page headings are black). The green OERu theme, headings and subheadings are green. --Mackiwg (talk) 23:00, 6 February 2015 (UTC)

PL Fixed in the new version

Wayne Mackintosh 2015-02-06 03:09
5 Bug Navigation hierarchy not working displaying correctly. Looks like all level 2 and level 3 pages are currently behaving displayed as level 2 items in the pull down navigation (see for example links under courseware)
PL Question - Could you add some more info?
Compare the pull down menu for courseware in the WP version with the courseware pull down menu in this snapshot example. (See also the hierarchy of the courseware section in the wiki course outline. --Mackiwg (talk) 23:23, 6 February 2015 (UTC)
Is this a script issue? --Mackiwg (talk) 04:15, 17 February 2015 (UTC)
PL - Fixed in the last version I believe
Third level navigation (example: Assessment > Peer evaluation) menu appears improperly placed: it should probably open to the right of the existing dropdown element. (Actually third level navigation was intended to be an in-page navigation element as mentioned below. Dropdown menus opening off dropdown menus have some accessibility challenges and can also be annoying on touch devices.) --Jim Tittsler (talk) 07:50, 11 February 2015 (UTC) Appears fixed in version of 2015-02-17. --Jim Tittsler (talk) 03:31, 17 February 2015 (UTC)

6 Feature Would be nice if we could implement a different background colour in the drop down menu to signify the current page in the drop down menu. (Or suitable alternative) See for example this snapshot
PL Added in a new colour for this
Thanks. Is there a way in WP to make the alternate background in the dropdown menu for the current page to persist, i.e. the alternate colour is always displayed according to the current page. The current implementation shows the alternate colour when selected. If I collapse the menu, and return to the same pulldown menu without changing the current page, the alternate background does not display. (See behaviour of alternate background in menu item for current page in this example. --Mackiwg (talk) 23:10, 6 February 2015 (UTC))
PL Should persist as it uses .current_page_item class
Doesn't persist in version of 2015-02-17 (Using chrome) --Mackiwg (talk) 03:40, 17 February 2015 (UTC)
PL edit should do now
Example: Visit https://wordpress-oerudevpgogy.rhcloud.com/course-guide/technologies/# and expose the Course guide dropdown menu. The Technologies menu item is not highlighted to indicate the current page. --Jim Tittsler (talk) 03:18, 23 February 2015 (UTC)
PL Set the colour in the customiser and is now there - note this can be changed
Wayne Mackintosh 2015-02-06 03:25
7 Issue Image links. Image attributions of CC licensed images is a challenge. If we link back to the source image in the wiki, we should be fine because users can access the metadata. Currently the image link in the demo is pointing to an internal WP link. If we do import images to WP, we will need to figure out how to bring in the metadata for proper legal attribution. (Pointing back to the wiki may be easier for this version.)
PL Edit - Harvest script stuff?
PL Edit - the harvest script html doesn't change the image click action to point back to wikipedia, so the harvest script will need to resolve this.
Wayne Mackintosh 2015-02-06 03:42
8 Bug If user selects one of the drop down menu items, it remains in expanded state i.e. doesn't collapse if the user clicks somewhere else on the page.
PL Fixed in the next version
Wayne Mackintosh 2015-02-06 03:53
9 Bug CSS link colour in blue theme. In the blue Otago Poly theme, link colours of the WP demo are displayed in green - They should be blue (However in the green OERu theme, links should be green. I suspect an oversight in the NewSplash CSS.)
PL - link colours can be changed on the customiser? I will set to be the same as the menu
Ideally the theme should be deployed without the need for custom settings in WordPress when first "imported" with the script. --Mackiwg (talk) 03:18, 17 February 2015 (UTC)
PL Edit - theme has a default profile installer - which colours are set I will populate this
Wayne Mackintosh 2015-02-06 23:28
10 Bug iDevice heading (.panel-heading) is rendering as blue on blue (rather than white). Example: https://wordpress-oerudevpgogy.rhcloud.com/course-guide/course-aims/ blue bar contains the word Aims Jim Tittsler 2015-02-11 08:09
11 Issue How do you upload a scan page with either a desired HTML fragment or a list of links, rows, colors? (The thing behind the "tree icon" in the menu bar of https://olijones.github.io/ )
Will need to decide if we deploy the scan page concept for the prototype DS4OER course. Will discuss with Jim --Mackiwg (talk) 04:20, 17 February 2015 (UTC)
  • The Scan page is an experimental alternate navigation which we are trialling. I hope to trial this again during the next course and will survey learners to get feedback on the utility. You can see a working example by clicking on the tree here: http://wikieducator.org/course/OCL4Ed/. This is essentially a row and column grid layout which generates "buttons" which link to the relevant pages in the course site. In this example, the current page is highlighted in green. Our prototype example utilises a widget and templates in the wiki to the identify pages and structure for the script to "talk" with the target page CSS (see wiki example: http://wikieducator.org/Practice:OCL4Ed/SCAN ) For the Wordpress theme - is it possible to emulate the pop-up window for prototype purposes in the current theme? --Mackiwg (talk) 21:07, 3 March 2015 (UTC)
Jim Tittsler 2015-02-11 08:35
12 Issue What is the purpose of the "login" icon in the menubar of a course delivered in Wordpress? How does the harvest script configure the resulting popover and form? The default seems to do nothing.
We will need to take a decision on what the login icon does in the first prototype depending on what we decide for registering students in the first DS4OER course. Will discuss with Jim --Mackiwg (talk) 04:18, 17 February 2015 (UTC)--Mackiwg (talk) 04:18, 17 February 2015 (UTC)

13 Bug Shortcode [oeru_button] does not apply the button styling for the theme.
The revised theme for [oeru-button] is not the same as the overall theme style used for other buttons on the site (see buttons on this page as example: http://wordpress-oerudevpgogy.rhcloud.com/ )
PL Edit fixed now
Could you check again - The resultant button from [oeru_button target="_blank" href="http://www.google.com" label="google"] on this page uses a different button theme to the buttons generated from the script on http://wordpress-oerudevpgogy.rhcloud.com/ --Mackiwg (talk) 20:10, 22 February 2015 (UTC)

PL Edit - changed code to do this

Wayne Mackintosh 2015-02-15 22:10
14 Bug Shortcode [oer_accordion science] does not appear to be working. Tried help example: [oer_accordion science="What is Science?" science_data="Lots of things"] - does not render. See for e.g.: https://wordpress-oerudevpgogy.rhcloud.com/support/waynes-page/ Wayne Mackintosh 2015-02-15 22:12
15a Bug Shortcode [oer_fitb ] does not appear to be working. Tried help example [oer_fitb answer=”lima”] and it did not render. See for e.g. here: https://wordpress-oerudevpgogy.rhcloud.com/support/waynes-page/
The theme uses a slightly different approach for displaying correct and incorrect answers (ie green or red background shading with the text displayed in the box.) See the theme colours here: http://olijones.github.io/copyrightcasestudy1 and example demonstrating operation here: http://wikieducator.org/course/OCL4Ed/Pathways/Copyright/Case_study_Q1/ --Mackiwg (talk) 04:12, 17 February 2015 (UTC)
PL added in
Not working properly - need to tweak behaviour: 1) When page loads, should display default background colour (whiteish) 2) Learner types text (no change in box) 3) When learner hits enter or tab correct / incorrect answer behaviour should display i.e green background for correct and red background for incorrect. --Mackiwg (talk) 21:12, 22 February 2015 (UTC)
PL Edit now resolved
Almost ;-) Works with when hitting tab, but enter key has no effect. --Mackiwg (talk) 03:18, 25 February 2015 (UTC)
PL - works on enter - can I have my cigar now :)
You can have two cigars! --Mackiwg (talk) 04:35, 3 March 2015 (UTC)

15b Bug Shortcode [oer_idevice type] not rendering. See for example [oer_idevice type=”Activity” content=”What is the best way to do this”] here: https://wordpress-oerudevpgogy.rhcloud.com/support/waynes-page/ Wayne Mackintosh 2015-02-15 22:19
16 Bug Content associated with 3rd level navigation pages in the page element navigation not linking. Correct url is displayed but not associated with the correct content. For example, clicking on "Create blog" correctly changes the url to "https://wordpress-oerudevpgogy.rhcloud.com/courseware/orientation/create-blog/" but displays the content for "https://wordpress-oerudevpgogy.rhcloud.com/courseware/orientation/e-activity-declare-yourself/" Wayne Mackintosh 2015-02-15 22:25
17 Bug When applying [oeru_remove_next] to a page, the Next button is removed from the page, but an error appears in the text display of the previous button showing "← Previous" rather than the arrow.

"← Previous"

Wayne Mackintosh 2015-02-15 22:32
18 Bug When applying [oeru_remove_prev] previous button is removed correctly. However the remaining "Next button" text displays as "Next →" without the right arrow. Wayne Mackintosh 2015-02-15 22:36
19 Bug Shortcode [oeru_mtq question] doesn't render as multiple select item. Wayne Mackintosh 2015-02-15 22:41
20 Bug Shortcode [oer_faq question] does not appear to be rendering.
Question is now rendering. However in the "expanded" view the text for the answer is not displaying. --Mackiwg (talk) 01:01, 17 February 2015 (UTC)
PL edit - fixed now
Now working correctly in my Chrome but not FireFox (when page loads in FF the FAQ is displayed in expanded view without the corresponding "arrow" indicator.) - I don't have access to IE for testing - so perhaps worth checking IE as well. --Mackiwg (talk) 20:23, 22 February 2015 (UTC)

PL Implemented fix for FF

Wayne Mackintosh 2015-02-15 23:27
21 Feature For the rendering of [oer_accordion], is it possible to have the "arrow" indicators while keeping the full bar of the accordion clickable? - The 3rd level navigation page element has an example of the arrow (but the full bar is not clickable.) Thinking about a visual clue for the user to know that that the element is an expandable accordion.
PL Added in
Introduced new bug. Expand / collapse function not working --Mackiwg (talk) 20:27, 22 February 2015 (UTC)
PL Edit - there was an issue with syntax, have fixed and improved guidance
Accordion still not working for me (I think I have the syntax correct) - see https://wordpress-oerudevpgogy.rhcloud.com/support/waynes-page/. Note there is an error in the instructions - feedback element for Art using science_data. Thought: You could reuse components of the CSS for the 3rd-level page element navigation (see for eg https://wordpress-oerudevpgogy.rhcloud.com/assessment/peer-evaluation/submit-activity/) - this is effectively an accordion? --Mackiwg (talk) 03:47, 25 February 2015 (UTC)
PL Edit - ah joys of definitions - you have an accordion and an accordion multi now so two shortcodes.
For [oeru_accordion] - please remove the graphic depicting a menu so that the accordion only displays the title text. --Mackiwg (talk) 05:26, 3 March 2015 (UTC)
Please indent the body text (same pixels as accordion multi). I see the text is running on the left margin. --Mackiwg (talk) 05:38, 3 March 2015 (UTC)
Cool - neat to have [oeru_accordion_multi] - do you think we should cater for collapsed view of all accordion items when the page loads, rather than one expanded and one collapsed? Not a feature request, just wondering about best deployment. --Mackiwg (talk) 05:26, 3 March 2015 (UTC)
PL - Added an active option to multi so you can have all collapsed or a specific one open - instructions also updated. Removed the icon from the standard accordion as well
Wayne Mackintosh 2015-02-17 03:56
22 Issue Missing shortcode for quotation. See example of the style for quotation here: https://olijones.github.io/courseguide.html. Will need separate parameters for quotation text and author.
PL Added in
There is a missing grey vertical bar for quotations - could you add this to the quotation shortcode. See http://oeru.github.io/themes/newSplash/courseguide.html --Mackiwg (talk) 03:33, 25 February 2015 (UTC)
PL - was there but have made it darker

23 Bug Implement theme for iDevices

The shortcode for [oer_idevice] should apply the local theme and icons (rather than the Wikieducator themes for idevices.

PL Done
Still displaying the WikiEducator theme for idevices. It should use the local theme (i.e. the Blue banner with corresponding icon set.) --Mackiwg (talk) 21:19, 22 February 2015 (UTC)
PL Edit - changed all to PNG
The type parameter is case sensitive. I noticed that the instructions are not consistent where the type parameter contains 2 words. In some cases the second word is lowercase, and others the 2nd word is upper-case. Could we implement this so that the type parameter is not case sensitive (that is cater for all lower case and options of first and 2nd word upper and lower case so the user doesn't need to worry about case. When rendered - the theme convention is First word upper case and second word lower case.) --Mackiwg (talk) 03:57, 25 February 2015 (UTC)
PL - There was some case sensitivity removal in code, I've made it more explicit
Almost there ;-). Code now handles case sensitivity options in the Title parameter in the shortcode. However, when the idevice renders in published view, all text is lower case. The default rendering for IDevices should always be First letter upper case, if the idevice has a second word, the second word should be lowercase. --Mackiwg (talk) 05:06, 3 March 2015 (UTC)
PL - Upper case first letter, the rest is lower case (made the change)
Wayne Mackintosh 2015-02-17 04:35
24 Bug Missing "title" parameter for [oer_idevice]

We will need a "title" parameter. This provides the option for a user to display an alternate title for the idevice associated with the icon for "Type". If "title" is empty, iDevice should display the text for type. See: http://wikieducator.org/Template:IDevice

PL Done

Wayne Mackintosh 2015-02-17 04:41
25 Issue Suggest changing the parameter "content" in [oeru_idevice] to "body" to be consistent with parameter name of the WE template. See: http://wikieducator.org/Template:IDevice

PL Done

26 Bug Firefox word wrap breaks words Noticed in Firefox that the word wrapping is not working properly that words are breaking.
PL - Cam you send me a link?
Go to home page in FF: https://wordpress-oerudevpgogy.rhcloud.com/ - Resize window and watch the text wrapping in the Learner support section. --Mackiwg (talk) 03:24, 25 February 2015 (UTC)
PL - Fixed
Wayne Mackintosh 2015-02-22 21:05
27 Bug Return state behaviour of interactive buttons and questions Would it be possible to implement a "return" state for interactive elements (i.e. Feedback button, radio buttons on MCQ, Check your answer on multi-select and True false.) What I have in mind is after a learner clicks an option, if they click or check this again the expanded feedback should collapse or feedback for checked option should collapse. In other words, a way for the learner to attempt the question again without refreshing the page.

PL Edit - MCQ Done

True false should do already?

Feedback done

Multi-select done

Wayne Mackintosh 2015-02-22 21:25
28 Bug In the newSplash theme, I think the third level navigation was intended to be a page level element and should not appear as dropdown menu elements off of dropdown menu elements. (Example: Assessment/Peer evaluation should not pop out another layer of dropdown menu.)

PL Edit you can set the menu to be 2 level only if that fixes that?

Jim Tittsler 2015-02-23 03:19
29 Issue Default landing page The default course home page has a custom header title, strap line, optional image and 1 to 4 column layout. See course example here: http://wikieducator.org/course/OCL4Ed/. The wiki uses a table layout with class="columns" so that the script can harvest the column layout for the custom css of the target website. Wayne Mackintosh 2015-03-03 21:24

# Type Details Reporter Time (UTC)
1 Bug Alignment of first character for <H1>. The first character should align with first character of H2 , H3 and body text.

2 Bug </s>IDevices not displaying the correct icon. All iDevices from the html import version of the script are displaying a question mark. For example, the Media IDevice is not displaying the Media icon.

PL Edit - suspect harvest script. The image paths are hard coded into the page html</s>

Wayne Mackintosh 2015-03-17 19:55
3 Bug Wrong title string for 3rd level in-page navigation element. The in-page navigation for the 3rd level should display the text string of the immediate parent. (Currently all pages default to "Orientation") So for example, when on the "Why use a wiki?" page , the text string should be "Developing wiki skills" as derived from the parent navigation.

PL Edit - fixed will upload new version once solved other stuff

PL - Change made
Wayne Mackintosh 2015-03-17 20:01
4 Bug Custom CSS needed for course landing page. Current landing page does not apply the theme, for instance, the example layout here and here.
  1. Custom layout needed for <table class="columns"> where <th> applies heading of style <H2>
  2. Tweaks to space between columns needed.

PL Edit - no obvious space to make change - without risking changing a lot of styles. Could use a different front page layout? I can try changing the CSS, but that HTML lacks an element to target directly.

Wayne Mackintosh 2015-03-17 22:11
5 Bug Possible conflict with Wiki CSS and WP theme CSS. A wiki page with an thumb image with right alignment plus caption, followed immediately with template {{IDevice}} results in the image not displaying properly in WordPress. (Note the image is not contained within the IDevice template as illustrated with this revision instance.) It looks as if the image only downloads partially - just the top of the image display yet the Idevice displays properly.
PL Possible fix in place
Almost fixed, displays in wide sreen. However, in narrow mobile portrait view, text wrapping issue. Big area of white space below image is generate forcing text way down the page instead of immediately below the image. --Mackiwg (talk) 01:23, 21 March 2015 (UTC)
Working now in mobile view.
Wayne Mackintosh 2015-03-20 09:10
6 Bug H2 Headings not displaying Possibly a new bug. Noticed that H2 headings in the wiki are not displaying in the resultant page in WP. We should also test for H3, H4 etc. Wayne Mackintosh 2015-03-20 23:27
7 Bug Wiki syntax for a definition list with indents (see example here) does not render with corresponding formatting in WP (see example here). See also the change in font in the WP which should be using the default body text font.
PL Edit - some problems with extra P elements in idents. Should now be ok
Indents now working thanks. However, fonts are inconsistent (size). The body text of the indent of the definition should use the same font as normal body text. (Currently looks like a smaller typeface, and possible a different font. Have not had a change to check the HTML source to to travel. --Mackiwg (talk) 22:37, 24 March 2015 (UTC)
Wayne Mackintosh 2015-03-21 00:39
8 Bug Background of bold text in alternate shaded rows displays as white. Should be same colour as the shaded row. See for example here and corresponding page in the wiki.

PL Edit - CSS changed

Wayne Mackintosh 2015-03-21 00:46
9 Feature Possible feature request. In the 3rd level navigation page element, is it possible for the CSS to automatically insert the number sequence of subpages, eg 1. , 2. , 3. etc as a visual signal of the order in wide table view? In the portrait mobile view the sequence is obvious - but of course no harm have the auto numbering. Not a major issue - but nice to have.
PL - think I have added in
Inadvertently - I think we have generated a new bug - the 3rd level page navigation elements no longer displaying? --Mackiwg (talk) 22:42, 24 March 2015 (UTC)
Wayne Mackintosh 2015-03-21 01:25
10 Bug Wiki css for <Gallery> tag (see for example here) is not rendering in CSS of WP target site (see for example here).

PL - Think this is now in

Wayne Mackintosh 2015-03-21 06:44
11 Bug Inconsistent styling of links across colour themes.
  • In blue theme hover displays as green - should be consistent with the blue theme or no effect
  • In both Blue and Green themes a visited link "disappears" on the screen. Choose a behaviour to that user can see the link that has been visited.

PL Edit - correct colour schemes

Wayne Mackintosh 2015-03-21 07:21
12 Feature Identification of current page within 3rd level page element navigation. As in the case of the global navigation - its it possible to signal the current page - for example a dark grey background with white text - or some other highlighting option that matches the colour theme (sorry - I'm not a graphic designer.)

PL edit - forgot to add to css

Wayne Mackintosh 2015-03-21 08:28
13 Bug Issues with mobile navigation When using a portrait view on a mobile device screen:
  1. Pop up of the submenu items is inconsistent. The "Startup" "Assessment" & "Learning console" submenu display to the left compared to the "Courseguide" option which seems to be centred.
  2. On my Android - the last submenu option appears to be launching a scroll bar - but can't scroll. (Take a look at the behaviour of the submenu options for mobile here: http://wikieducator.org/course/Curriculum_design_for_open_education/ - Perhaps a better solution?)

PL edit - should now be fixed

Queries

Shortcode questions

  • Accordion - I have done this and will try to style colourwise as per the rest of the theme
    • That's fine. consistent background and style in expanded view is fine. --Mackiwg (talk) 02:00, 6 February 2015 (UTC)
  • Course title block: Specifies course title, strapline and course image - this can all be done on the theme customiser - would it be preferable to change it per page?
    • Ideally, when the script runs it would be nice if the users is not required to customise the page type in Wordpress after the import. Jim, we may need to think about a wiki template if this style is used on other pages within the course. However, I don't image a use case other than the landing page. --Mackiwg (talk) 02:03, 6 February 2015 (UTC)
  • Default footer: which provides CC license attributions and optional institution logo (see for example: http://olijones.github.io/index.html#) - think the theme widgets covers this https://wordpress-oerudevpgogy.rhcloud.com/wp-admin/widgets.php is the link to play with footer content.
    • I envisage two footer areas:
      1. The "default" footer which contains the CC license, link to Privacy Policy, Author history in the Wiki and the logo of the contributing OERu partner. See for example the footer here: http://www.olijones.github.io/index.html. --Mackiwg (talk) 23:32, 6 February 2015 (UTC)
      2. Optional extended footer which has the ability to add additional "navigational links" to pages on the site which are support links, i.e. not part of the main course content. See below for more info. --Mackiwg (talk) 23:32, 6 February 2015 (UTC)
  • Extended footer: The footer support widgets - but I am not sure what text in the footer would be page dependent - so perhaps an example would help? Am not sure if the theme footer covers this?
    • I envisage the "extended footer" for additional support links, for example help tutorials, learner support etc. This would enable us to reclaim real estate on the global navigation, for example by shifting the support link in this snapshot to the footer area. --Mackiwg (talk) 23:32, 6 February 2015 (UTC)
    • The extended footer area could mimic the display /style of this theme example. The theme has a "heading" and sublinks arranged in columns. For example we could have headings for "Help tutorials" and "Learner support" with sub-headings which link to pages on the site. So for example: under the "heading" Help tutorials, we could have 1) Registration tutorial 2) Blog tutorial 3) Microblog tutorial etc . Under the "heading" Learner support, we could have 1) Tips, 2) FAQs 3) Ask a friend etc.
    • We would need to have a clear way in the wiki to identify pages and links for the optional extended footer area, for example, and alternate sub-page in the wiki (for example http://wikieducator.org/course/footer with corresponding bullet list which the script can harvest or other clever solution.) --Mackiwg (talk) 23:32, 6 February 2015 (UTC)
    • In Wordpress the "header" does not link to a page, but the sub-pages under the header would link to to the standard page type we are using for course content. --Mackiwg (talk) 23:32, 6 February 2015 (UTC)

General questions

  • Most WordPress themes support menu nesting to any level - so the theme supports more than 2 - should people want it too - is this ok?
    • Yes, that's fine. If users want to go beyond three levels post import, that's fine. In our current model we accommodate 3 hierarchical levels. The 3rd level navigation in the style is a page element (expand / collapse table - see for example the orientation navigation here). The default should be the page element navigation. However, if using the native wordpress theme navigation, perhaps we can deploy an "off" / "on" option in the theme?
