Objective
This page is dedicated to documenting our trials and tribulations throughout the project in support similar projects or those that may follow in our footsteps. This sort of documentation seems especially relevant since WikiEducator is an organisation interested in facilitating learning.

Such documentation might include:

  • History and timeline
  • Important steps
  • How we found answers to our questions
  • Evolution of expectations
  • Who was involved
  • What we are planning for the future


Major events and "Huzzah!!" moments

  • Meeting people involved in WikiEducator and agreeing to collaborate with them. And there was much rejoicing.
  • Met with Duane Elverum, who provided us with lots of great connections and ideas. (Especially for Rachel integrating the project into her schoolwork.)
  • Talked to Chung and Varouj,both architects with valuable input.

Useful tools

  • The dropbox blog has shown huge success. It is constantly being updated and provides an easy way to access the new information via RSS. We can also get RSS feeds of the comments, which helps immensely with nurturing discussion.
  • The wiki has yet to meet expectations as a good collaboration tool. Few people seem interested/able to get started. Perhaps the wiki will be better off just recording...

Dates/Timeline

  • 2008, The inital idea was conceived and much brainstorming happened. (Rachel: perhaps you can pin this down a bit better)
  • 2008, Initial ideas are recorded in GoogleDocuments by the project founders, still fairly private.
  • January 15, 2009, WikiEducator offers to host the project wiki and the GoogleDocument pages are transplanted and expanded. This is the first node that is public, though it would be tough to say that anyone has noticed it as of yet.
  • January 23, 2009, GoogleGroups page is started after the question of archiving and consolidating email discussion is raised. (GoogleGroups allow mailing-list type activities.)
  • January 29, 2009, Facebook group created (12 members)
  • ~First Week of February; Rachel and Scott take a bit of a vacation to work on other school work :)
  • February 6, 2009; Facebook group approx. 45 members
  • The vacation hardly lasts and the main project actors are back again. We just can't stand being away!
  • February 20, 2009: Start looking into Google Sketchup as a very simple CAD tool, and Kaltura as a way to collaboratively make videos. Facebook: 66. Wiki editors: 6 have accounts, but most of the editing still seems to be done by 1 or 2 people.
  • February 25, 2009: We recently found out that we can rss the comments on blogger blogs. This will hopefully help nurture discussion.
  • April 5, 2009: The dropbox blog has definitely been more productive than the wiki in supporting and archiving discussion and ideas. The wiki has moved to a more archival role where we plan to write more cohesive articles at a time. No discussion is happening on the facebook group. Facebook: 81 members. Dropbox: 79 posts and many comments.
