Definition
Quantitative variable
  • A variable measured on a numeric (i.e., interval or ratio) scale, such that each numerical value represents an amount
  • A variable that is not quantitative is known as qualitative.



Examples

The following are examples of quantitative variables:

  • Weight
  • Height
  • Population size
  • Shoe size
  • Average speed of racing cars

Note that coding a gender variable as 1=male and 2=female is not quantitative in nature as the numbers do not represent an amount.
