Servicing a 2 stroke

Objective

Learn the theory and demonstrate the practice of servicing small engines

Activity

Service a 2 stroke

1. View this video of Rod McKenzie demonstrating how to service a 2 stroke motor.

2. Create our own video (starring YOU) that demonstrates how to service a 2 stroke mower, line trimmer or hedge trimmer. Video must include at least the following:

  • refer to the owners manual and pointing out the manufacturer's service recommendations
  • clean body of the machine
  • tighten and loose fittings, eg handles.
  • clean air filter
  • clean or replace spark plugs
  • mix fresh 2 stroke fuel and refuel the engine
  • record and date your maintenance to a service log book
  • Explain why and how you do these steps, and point out the results for your efforts.
  • Be sure to wear appropriate safety gear and explain why you are wearing it in relation to the tools you are using.

3. Upload your video to Youtube and send the link to your learning facilitator.

(Tip - Use a standard digital camera, or camera phone if you can, and ask a friend to help you record the video. Be sure you are in a location that is quiet and has good light - so we can hear and see what you are doing... make sure we can see it is you and get up close)

NB. If you cannot access a video camera, or someone to help you with this task, organize a time with your learning facilitator to demonstrate that you know how to do the above tasks.

Service a 4 stroke

1. View this video of Rod McKenzie demonstrating how to service a 4 stroke motor (at 9min 20 secs).

2. Create our own video (starring YOU) that demonstrates how to service a 4 stroke lawn mower, reel mower or rotary hoe. Video must include at least the following:

  • refer to the owners manual and pointing out the manufacturer's service recommendations
  • clean body of the machine
  • tighten any loose fittings, eg handles.
  • clean air filter
  • clean or replace spark plugs
  • change engine oil
  • refuel with premium fuel
  • record and date your maintenance to a service log book

  • Explain why and how you do these steps, and point out the results for your efforts.
  • Be sure to wear appropriate safety gear and explain why you are wearing it in relation to the tools you are using.
