Triggers
The following situations may bring on a person’s first episode of mania or depression.

  • Stress
  • Not having a regular sleep schedule
  • Alcohol or drugs
  • Stopping your medicine
  • Starting medicines for depression (in some cases), or other medicines and herbal products
  • Having thyroid problems and other medical conditions
  • Seasonal changes
  • Holidays
  • Illness
  • Disagreements with family or friends
  • Problems at work
  • The death of a loved one
  • Marriage
  • Starting college
  • Starting a new job


Signs and Symptoms
The above triggers can bring on the following signs and symptoms of a bipolar disorder. They can be different in each person, making it difficult to diagnose. There are, however, some key indicators of the illness. The symptoms are what the person with a possible bipolar disorder feels or thinks. Signs are what others around them see as red flags of a bipolar disorder.
