At the primary level, four traditional Language Arts have been taught. These are: Listening, Speaking, Reading and Writing. A more contemporary approach sees us speaking of six language arts. To the well-worn, traditional four arts, are added, Viewing and Representing.

Teachers of the Language Arts in the Caribbean still have to struggle with all the issues that attend teaching English in a English-Creole society, where the language of instruction is not necessarily, the first language of students. Teachers therefore, must be well-trained and even re-tooled for the task.
