3. 1 - Menus

Menu bar is where you can access menus which contain most commands in all application programmes. It is one way you interact with windows is by selecting a menu and then choosing a command option from that menu.

When a menu is selected, a drop-down menu consisting of a list of items from which you make further selections. Many of the items on the menu are commands that represent actions you want the application to perform.

Every time you right click with mouse you have another menu. This menu is called short –cut menu

3.2 - Scroll Bars

When you are not able to see all of the items available in a window, a scroll bar will appear on the right and/ or bottom edges of the window. The scroll bars allow you to move around the window to display additional contents.

  1. To view the contents at the bottom of the documents do any of the following:
  2. Click on the down scroll arrow of the vertical scroll bar
  3. Click on the area below the vertical scroll box
  4. Drag the vertical scroll box down
  5. To view the contents at the top of the document do any of the following:
  1. Click on the up scroll arrow of the vertical scroll bar
  2. Click on the area above the vertical scroll box
  3. Drag the vertical scroll box up
  1. To view the contents on the right side of the document do any of the following:
  2. Click on the right scroll arrow of the horizontal scroll bar
  3. Click on the area right for the horizontal scroll box
  4. Drag the horizontal scroll box to the right
  1. To view the contents on the left side of the document do any of the following;
  2. Click on the left scroll arrow of the horizontal scroll bar
  3. Click on the area left of the horizontal scroll box
  4. Drag the horizontal scroll box to the left

3.3 - Saving a document

To saving a document for the first time, Select File/ Save As from the menu bar. Notice a Save As dialogue box will appear.

On the Save in box, select the location where you want to save your document by clicking the save in arrow then give a file name for your document where it labelled “File name”. After done these, click on “Save” button to save your work.


If you do not save your work, a dialog box will pop up and ask you to save the file. Click yes, if you wan to save the changes or click No, if you do not want to save your work. Click Cancel to return to your document.


3.4 - Creating a Computer file

A file is a name collection of program or data that exists on a storage medium such as a Hard disk, a floppy disk, or a CD_ROM. Suppose you use a computer to write a letter to your friend. The words contains in the letter are stored on the disk in a file. The file has a name to distinguish it from the other files on your disk.

We are going to create a simple computer file to see how we can save it on the desktop.

  1. Click on start, point to All program and click on Microsoft Word or on the start menu.
  1. Type in the following sentence:” This is my first file created during the Computing course at the Youthfirst Computer. It is an Introduction to Computing Course.”
  1. Click on the file on the menu bar and click on Save As
  1. Click the Save In list arrow and then click Desktop.
  1. Now click on the File Name box below and delete any text or if it still highlight blue just type “Training 1”, and click on the Save button.
  1. The file name for the document we created is the name ‘Training 1’.
  1. Now close your document, click on the File menu and click Exit or close button to see your file on the desktop.
