1.1 Introduction

This unit giving information on nutrition needed by community health. The community health workers to carry out the nutrition element of their jobs. Some nutrition information help the community health workers develop the skills they need to teach nutrition in the community. Work with people to identify the situations causing nutrition problems and plan tasks and activities to change or prevent them. Communicate with people in the community who can work with them to improve nutrition. Work with community members to develop appropriate nutrition messages.Care and treatment of children who have diarrhea. Advise mothers on feeding children during and after diarrhea and infections.

1.2 Objectives

At the end of this unit we will be able to:

• Communicate nutrition messages simply and convincingly. • Understand that nutrition problems have many causes and usually require several activities to solve them. • Explain to mothers the causes and dangers of diarrhea. • Explain the causes of protein-energy malnutrition to parents. • Explain to pregnant women and mothers the importance of eating well. • Help mothers to understand why breast-feeding is best for children.

1.3 Communicating Nutrition Messages

• Rules of good communication • Priority messages • Communications in the village

Good communication is difficult because people do not always agree on:

What a health problem is and to do about a health problem. What should be done first and who should do what. These skills are best learned by understanding the problems that other people in the community face. To communicate well with people you must – • Listen • Share ideas • Receives ideas • Understand behavior • Share, give and receive information.

Priority message means which are the most important messages want to communicate to people in the community.

The following exercises will help you to develop skills in listening to, and speaking to, different people in the village. You will learn how to-

  • listen with care to what people are saying
  • observe the ideas and beliefs that are shown by what people say and do.
