We are human beings. We live in a society. So as a social being we live in a family. In a family we do live in family. In a family we do various types of duties and responsibilities. As student we have to know about family. Here, we have to know concept, types and functions of a family .

Concept and Formation of Family


Family is a permanent social Institution. A family is formed by a man and a woman living together united by marriage and recognized by society. A family may exist with or without children. But after the birth of a child they are tied together mutually by blood relationship. Blood relationship is real basis and unity of a family.

In social life, the necessity of family is multifarious. The family is a permanent social insyiyution. Human race has expanded from family and with in the society has also prospered. In a family through marriage a permanent relationship is created between in a man and woman and they start live together. This is how a family forms. The main characteristics of a family is its maintenance by the same economy and its hereditary expansion under the same lineage.

Types of Family


Family has been classified in different ways. The classification of family is as under bellow, A.On the basis of the modes of marriage family has been classified in to two types.

  • Monogamous family

When a man marries only one woman and they live together is called a monogamous family.

  • Polygamous family

Where a man has more than one wife in a family is called a polygamous family.

B.On the basis of guardianship

  • Matriarchal family

In a family where children are know according to the identity of mother is called a matriarchal family.

  • Patriarchal family

In the family where the children are know according to the identity of father is called a patriarchal family.

C.On the basis of modern concept

  • Unitary family

Unitary family is formed with husband and sisters of husband and wife and their children.

  • Joint family

The family where the parents, brothers and sisters husband and wife and their children line together is called a joint family.

Functions of family


A man is born in a family and spends his whole life in the family and spends his whole life in the family till death. For this reason role of a family in social life is very important. With the change of time change the special functions of family. The main functions of family are discussed bellow,

Biological function In a national way a man and a woman are united by marriage and live together to form a family. They produce children and bring them up. In this way descendants of family of the family are increase. This is the biological function of a family.

Educational function The family is the first educational institution of the family. In a family a child grows up by love and affection of parents. From early stage children learn language, custom, manners and habits from family.

Economic Function In early time family was the center of production. The family owned the controlled the property. The male members jointly earned money and spent it to maintain the family. Within the family they would produced, distribute and consume the daily essential commodities. Still now preliminary vocational education is imparted within the family.

Political Function The members of a family at the outset learn within the family the rules of discipline and obedience to older. Besides, most of the members of a family discuss and advice each other. From the very beginning the members of a family learn the lessons of mutual cooperation, fellow-feeling and welfare attitude from the family.

Psychological Function The parents discharge the responsibilities of creating social consciousness in the minds of the members of family while bringing, them up. The family helps the members for their physical and mental development through care.

Recreational Function To provide recreation facilities for its member is one of the responsibilities of a family. The members of a family enjoy pure pleasure through various type of games, picnic, festivals, gossiping, hear Radio and watch Television at leisure time.

Religious Function The children learn the primary ideas about religion from family. They learn to observe the religious rituals and ceremonies from the adult members of the family. They receive religious education from the family and thus become religious minded.

Socialization The family also gives knowledge to its members about society. Actually the socialization grows among the members of society through family. As a member of a society he or she learns about his duties, social manners, rules and principles, values, religion and culture from his family. Like your parents and grand parens teaching you dos and donts.
