Dr Jane Fee reflects on scenario planning at Kwantlen Polytechnic University

Dr Jane Fee is Deputy Provost and Associate Vice President Academic at Kwantlen Polytechnic University (KPU). The leadership team at KPU engaged in an extensive and robust scenario planning exercise to support strategic planning at the university. The consultative development of the scenarios involved over 350 individuals and was used to help the university become more focused on the future. The aim of the scenarios was to explore what higher education would look like in the year 2042 focusing 30 years into the future.

Two axis exploring the high impact uncertainties were used to construct the scenarios:

  • Global versus local
  • User pay versus society funded education

The KPU scenarios were used to stress test the university's strategic plan and to develop internal capacity to think about the future. Jane highlights two major impacts arising from this scenario planning exercise:

  • The scenarios have confirmed the strategic goals of the university's strategic plan; and
  • Emphasised the need for the University to focus on the use of technology and student learning.
