Planning is the process by which we select our goals and ways to achieve such goals. All units of social life such as individuals, families, groups, organizations and governments need to plan.
Planning is a forward looking process. It looks into the future.
Purpose of planning
If you don’t know where you are going, you are sure to end up somewhere else – Mark Twain
The purpose of planning is to avoid the above situation by clearly defining the objectives, adopting brilliant policies to achieve the objectives and developing a workable action plan based on such policies. This process is further detailed below:
To define objectives
Systematic planning starts with a clear statement of objectives. You have to find out answers to the following three questions before finalizing the statement of objectives.
- Why I preparing this plan?
- What am I trying to accomplish?
- What resources do I need to execute the plan?
To make the things happen
To cope with change
To control the events
