Computer Basics/Software/Software interaction

System software and application software work together to carry out a user command. When a user enters a command, the system software starts the application software. The application software sends specific instructions to the system software to carry out the command. The system software allows the application software to access and use the hardware to carry out the command.
There are two easy ways to remember how system software and application software work together (or interact). This involves using the words CASH or ERIC - the letters in each word can help you remember the sequence.
CASH comes from the first letter of each of the words in bold:
Computer user enters the command
Application software receives the command
System software interprets the command and directs
Hardware to carry out the command
ERIC comes from the first letter of each of the words in bold:
Computer user Enters the command
Application software Receives the command
System software Interprets the command and directs
Hardware to Carry out the command
