Finding Pages & Topics

Searching and finding pages in WikiEducator (and the Community Media node) can be a bit tricky. The Search Engine isn't the greatest. I recommend using Google (or any search engine) with the following terms "wikieducator" + community media + additional search terms.

Creating New Pages on the WikiEducator Community Media node

Organisation & Navigation Conventions

Since WikiEducator is a flat-structure wiki, anyone can create pages, in any name space. While there is great freedom and openness, it also creates a problem for finding content (discussed above). Thus, we are using the following 'Conventions', to make it easier to find content.

In most situations, content is being created by organisations in general, and individuals within organisations. We recommend that ALL materials created by that organization, be placed on a page within the Organisation Home Page path, in a way that is logical. These suggestions will create consistency across the Community Media node, so that it will be easier to find your Organisation and Others

  • Within our Community Media path, create a new page for your Organisation. (i.e., use your ORGANISATION_NAME, as the name for the new page). (See: http://www.wikieducator.org/Community_Media/New_page}
  • Please use CAPITAL LETTERS. For example, Maraa's Organisation Page is http://wikieducator.org/Community_Media/MARAA.
    • For reference purposes, this page is referred to, as your OrganiSation Home Page on WikiEducator (Community Media Node)
  • For new content, place the Page_Name AFTER the Organisation Home Page Slash (/). (i.e., Community_Media/MARAA/New_Page)
  • Please use Capital Letters for each of the first words
  • Please use an underscore ("_") for each space between words

Editing Your Page

Please be sure to insert the following templates on All Pages:

1. Work in Progress Template

The syntax is - 2 squiggly open bracket WIP 2 closed squiggly brackets (see the code within the 'edit' mode of this page)

2. Community Media Navigation Template

The syntax is - 2 squiggly open brackets Community_media_nav 2 closed squiggly brackets (see the code within the 'edit mode of' this page)

.

Put in information about your organisation (2-3 paragraphs), including your Organisation's interests, contact people and interests / collaboration interests.

Create a List of Educational Resources

Create links to pages in your Organisation's Name Space (i.e., Community_Media/ORGANISATION/New_Materials). This is also the place to 'deep link' to your project pages.

Pages, Links & Projects

Create links to pages in your Organisation's Name Space (i.e., Community_Media/ORGANISATION/New_Materials)

Add the Appropriate Category

We use Categories to help us find pages and groups of pages. Be sure to insert the appropriate Category syntax into your page (i.e., Community Radio is: 2 squiggly open brackets Community_Media 2 squiggly closed brackets). See the syntax in the edit mode below.

Notifying & Alerting Our Community

  • Be sure to make a cross-entry in the Content & Projects Page in the appropriate category and/or media type, so the rest of the Community Media community will know about your educational resource.
  • Be sure to post an entry in the Community Media discussion group on Google (http://groups.google.com/community-media). This will alert the community to your materials, and give your organization added visibility.
  • Update your Comunity Media 'Media Type' page (i.e., Radio, etc.)

What WikiEducator Can Do

  • After our Community has been notified, we can then consider developing a news or feature item for the educational resource, that can be featured on the front page of the Community Media node and/or WikiEducator.
