Objective

To provide students with the confidence and skills to read maps at a basic level.


Activity

Otira Map


1. What is the map number?

2. What is the map type and scale?

3. Does the map have a grid reference system?

4. Name the mountain and its elevation located at E88 N10

5. Name the glacier on the south side of this mountain

6. What direction is Highway 73 running when it crosses Arthur's pass (E92 N11)?

7. Name the main river on the northern side of the map?

8. What lake lies at grid reference E99 N10?

9. Is Crow Hut (E89 N06) surrounded by native forest?

10. Avalanche Peak is near Arthur's Pass Village (E92 N06). Does it have a foot track on it and what is the elvation at the top of the peak?


Manapouri Map

1. What is the map number

2. What is the map type and scale?

3. Does the map have a grid reference system?

4. Estimate the distance in kilometres between

  • Manapouri and the power house across the lake (as if you were driving a boat)
  • The power house and Deep Cove (as if you were driving a bus)

5. Name the pass and its elevation to Deep Cove

6. Name the sound in which Deep Cove is located

7. Locate the Keplar Track. (clue: look in the northwest corner of the map) now list all the huts and emergency shelters you can find on the Keplar Track.

8. What is the elevation at the top of Mt Luxmore (E86 N22)?

9. What do contour lines indicate?

10. What is the elevation change between each row of contour lines?
