DIRECTIONS FOR PREPARING THE LAB "DETERMINING THE ACTIVATION ENERGY FOR THE REACTION BETWEEN BROMINE AND PHENOL"

For a class of 24 students (12 pairs):

CHEMICALS

CHEMICAL PREPARATION PROCEDURE
SOLUTION A (in 2 burettes) Dissolve and dilute 9.91 g potassium bromide (KBr) and 2.81 g potassium bromate (KBrO3) to exactly 1000 mL.
SOLUTION B (in 2 burettes) Dissolve and dilute 0.941 g phenol to 1 L.
SOLUTION C (in 2 burettes) To 1 L volumetric flask which is 1/2 full of water, slowly add 28.0 mL of concentrated sulphuric acid; then dilute to exactly 1 L.
Methyl Red (in 6 dropping bottles) Dissolve 0.020 g of Methyl Red indicator in 60 mL ethanol; then mix with 40 mL water.


EQUIPMENT 6 - burettes, with clamps and stands
6 - dropping bottles
25 x 200 mm test tubes
24 - 400 mL beakers
