This course introduces you to visual art and its practices across cultures. Emphasis is placed on the development of visual literacy through the consideration of art works, concepts and practices in different cultures. Students study the visual elements, media, art history and methods used to create and interpret various forms of visual art. Students learn how to appreciate, analyze, evaluate and contextualize a broad range of art works.


Learning Outcomes

After you successfully complete this course and all its activities and assessments, you will be able to:

  • Explain the role and effect of art in various social, historical and cultural contexts.
  • Engage the appropriate aesthetic theories and models to explain the processes involved in artistic production.
  • Discuss the political, social, cultural, environmental, and aesthetic issues that artists examine through their work.
  • Interpret examples of art, using an analytic and experiential process for understanding forms of visual art employing description, analysis, context, meaning and interpretation.
