People credited with this unit standard are able to: relate own experience of learning to Kolb’s Experiential Learning model, and apply Kolb’s Experiential Learning model to the improvement of own performance.

This unit is used in the following courses

Relate own experience of learning to Kolb’s Experiential Learning model.

  • The ‘Concrete Experience’ stage is described in terms of the candidate’s experience of learning in a specific context relevant to the candidate.
  • The ‘Reflective Observation’ stage is described in terms of the candidate’s experience of learning in a specific context relevant to the candidate.
  • The ‘Conceptualisation and Generalisation’ stage is described in terms of the candidate’s experience of learning in a specific context relevant to the candidate.
  • The ‘Active Experimentation’ stage is described in terms of the candidate’s experience of learning in a specific context relevant to the candidate.
  • Consideration is given to the applicability of Kolb’s learning cycle to other contexts.

Apply Kolb’s Experiential Learning model to the improvement of own performance.

  • An area of desirable performance improvement is selected in a specific context relevant to the candidate and the level of desired performance improvement is specified.
  • Reflective Observation stage is applied – all steps of a past experience in the area of desirable performance improvement are reflected upon and described clearly, objectively and without judgement.
  • Conceptualisation and Generalisation stage is applied – all steps of past experience are compared with the theoretical best practice and areas of improvement are identified.
  • Active Experimentation stage is applied – the means of improving performance in identified areas are described in terms of methods to be used and implementation timeframe.
  • Concrete Experience is applied – evidence is provided of the implementation of the improved performance method.
  • Evidence is gathered of changes to performance.
  • Performance improvement goal is achieved.

Range: the cycle may be repeated until the goal is achieved.
