What is this course about?

Food Technology uses raw ingredients to create new products that are perishable and the end product has to be eaten. This creates the need for a body of knowledge that is unique to food. Technologists strive to develop safe and more nutritious products that have a longer shelf life with lower process damage to the raw materials and less reliance on artificial ingredients and preservatives. To this end food technology students will use such headings as food formulation, food safety, food production, food packaging and labelling and food product testing to investigate and formulate an outcome to the given problem they are solving.

NB Courses to run in 2014 will contain a cross departmental structure.

What will I learn?

Students will undertake two projects for the year based around the three strands of the curriculum,Technological Knowledge,Technological Practice and The Nature of Technology. The design process will be used to problem solve the stakeholder's brief. The first assignment is looking at preservation of food and the assessment is over the processing method used to preserve a fruit. The second project is looking at a conceptual design and development of a fresh pasta product to meet a given brief. The assessment is over writing and developing a brief and modelling an outcome to meet the given brief. The external assessment is a written report of the risks involved with the modelling that has been carried out to develop the pasta product and should the product be developed at all.

What sorts of things will I do?

Depending on your project you may cover such things as brief development, conceptual development, experiments and trials of products, researching nutritional information, looking at the manufacture of products and using the work of food technologist as a case study to gain knowledge of product development.

Frequently asked questions:

Are there any prerequisites for this course?

There are no set prerequisites for Product Design courses at Albany Senior High School. It is however within the nature of the subject area that through the senior years, although students build their abilities using familiar methods of design and production, study will be at ever deeper more sophisticated levels.
There is an expectation that over this time students will move towards greater levels of independence where they are demonstrating enthusiasm, self motivation and perseverance in order to solve authentic design problems within their specialist Technological area. It is therefore advisable that you always speak to the specialist Technology teacher working in your area of interest before making final decisions on course choice.
