Draft outline of lessons:

Please note that this is the first draft outline of the proposed lessons. Obviously we cannot cover everything on safety. I have excluded some topics because of time constraints, equipment required or because it doesn’t lend itself well to experimentation.

Some lessons are blank – that’s mostly when student will be doing practical work.

27 hours required

Lessons/week: Lessons 1,2 & 3 are self-paced lessons (40-45 min); Lesson 4 is a web/teleconference (1 hour); Lesson 5 is has extension materials (15 min). Note: the web conference lesson is placed fourth just for convenience. It can be conducted at any time during the week.

Level of Inquiry for this unit? Problems: given; Ways/means: given; Answer: open

Week 1-2 (lessons 40 minutes each) Students work through the SAS Science Handbook – it covers the course requirements and also the various scientific skills student will use during the two years. (Learning experiences and activities still to be inserted for these two weeks). Each SDE will need to tailor-make sections of this handbook to suit their students.

Contents:

Lesson 1: • How the course works • The use of ICT

Lesson 2: • Managing your time • What do I have to send in?

Lesson 3: Planning • Identify and analyse a problem • Identify variables • Identify safety requirements • Predicting, hypothesising, inferring • Plan the design and procedure

Lesson 4: Conducting • Conduct preliminary trials • Carry out the experiment (observing, measure and record data)

Lesson 5: Processing • Organise data • Construct tables and graphs • Analyse data • Use science knowledge to develop explanations for patterns, trends or relationships in data.

Lesson 6: Evaluating • Evaluate findings in relation to the problem, question or hypothesis • Evaluate the design of the experiment and the techniques or methods used

Lesson 7: Science kit contents / MSDS School Use of Science equipment

Week 3-4 (lessons 40 minutes each)

Students look at safety in terms of technology – computers, internet, mobile phones.

Week 5-6 (lessons 45 minutes each)

Students look at safety in terms of recreational activities (drug use) and the environment (e.g. heat exhaustion, dehydration)

Week 7-8 (lessons 45 minutes each)

Students look at safety in relation to driving (collisions, driver fatigue/reaction time, concussion)

Week 9 (lesson 45 minutes each)

Students complete their assessment.
