INTRODUCTION

PNG is located within the tropics and has a tropical equatorial climate. The south coastal parts,have more of a tropical continental type having distinct wet and dry seasons. Most parts of the country experience a tropical equatorial climate characterised by dense tropical rainforests.Consequently,shifting cultivation or slash and burn has been and is still the main farming method practiced in most parts of PNG.
